Argued about politics, went ballistic on the boyfriend.
We both support Obama, but he started in on how Obama had everything and now he's losing it and it's his fault for not playing it the right way. "Obama has to prove himself to me," is how he put it. I'm like, "And if he doesn't, you're voting McCain?!" It got ugly and though we calmed down, he's gone and I'm crying. In my defense, I also have a wicked cold and am not at the top of my game.

I suddenly realize that my confidence in Obama's win is gone. Dear people, what will we do if he loses? How can people even THINK of voting for a conservative at this time? No, the boyfriend won't vote McCain, but he may do something like vote for Nader. He's pissed that Obama didn't pick Clinton.

Oh Jeebus. It's so very disheartening.

1. See this is exactly the kind of thing that needs to be thrown in the face of the "stick to issues"..
crowd.

People want to support who they feel is a winner, and to do that we need to bash the shit out of Palin and McCain to depict them as losers.

2. That, of course, is what he says.
But people are easily swayed by the bullshit and that's why McCain slings it, and that's why Obama must to some degree do the same. When I pointed this out, the boyfriend got on the "You're an Elitist" low horse. I AM an elitist!

There is no question this time around. It's Obama or the end of our world as we once knew it.

10.  McCain slings bullshit because that is all he has. He slings bullshit to deflect away from his
90% voting with bush record. Those who like the bullshit slinging were never really going to vote for Obama anyway, or IOW they were always going to vote for McCain whether they admit that or not.

McCain bullshit slinging just gave them the excuse they needed to say outright that they won't vote for Obama, when in fact they never were going to vote for him.

So if McCain slings bullshit, that's not elitist and if Obama starts throwing some right back, it is? :wtf:

You really think your boyfriend was ever going to vote for Obama?

12. "McCain's voting matches Bush 90%."
Let that be the new talking point, for people who understand what Bush has done to the country, and don't want any more of it.

Even Republicans feel that way, so let them know the hard, simple, imperative fact. Before the seduction of emotional struggle distracts them from "This is the same thing that fucked us over".

14. Oh, he will, I've no doubt.

The reason we argued is because he is upset with Obama for dropping the ball, so to speak. The boyfriend never voted for the shrub but ran as a republican in local politics years ago... so he won't lose the label. I told him I hate the f***** label especially when it comes with associated prejudices, like blaming Obama for not polling so well after the McCain convention bump.

Eh, whatever. Hi, Blue State Native. :hi:

to propaganda if it's well presented. Sometimes though we need to think with our heads and not our hearts.

7. I just had a discussion with a banker
He was arguing with me about pulling out of the stock market; said he was still very bullish. When I told him I was worried about McCain possibly winning, he agreed that Bush had screwed things up royally and then said he was afraid McCain was a bigger warmonger than Bush - a line I've used before. He ended up with, "I don't really like Obama, afraid he's going to raise taxes, but I'm going to vote for him as the lesser of two evils." I hope there are a lot more people like him out there.

8. Grab Gail Collins' column in today's NY Times and...
shove it down his, and every other discouraged Democrat's, throat.

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/11/opinion/11collins.html?_r=1&hp&oref=slogin

If that link doesn't work, go to nytimes.com and click the link to her column on the uppper right.

If that doesn't work, search for it on the Times' home page.

(If that doesn't work, PM me and I'll send you a copy.)

But whatever you do, READ THAT COLUMN! It's great.

9. Ya Gotta Believe
I posted this earlier in GD-Presidential, and it got absolutely zero response. I guess people would rather think the worst, than try to remain hopeful. Hopefully, it may help cheer you.

Ya Gotta Believe: An Essay on Hope
I’m a Cubs fan. By definition, that means I dread the month of September. So many hopes dashed in the past, as my beloved Cubbies have entered September leading, only to slump. The thing is – I still believe. When you’re a Cubs fan, “ya gotta believe.” You can’t let the slump get you down, because we know in our hearts that one day, we’re going to do it. Some day, we will finally grasp the brass ring. We saw the Red Sox do it, saw them finally do it, saw them finally break “the curse.” And so, we look forward to that some sweet delirium, that overwhelming joy of knowing that a wish so long denied has finally been granted.

Ya gotta believe.

I’m watching some of the people here in the sort of depression about the slide in the polls that I have seen in myself and in so many fellow Cubs fans over the years. “Nooooo!!! It can’t happen again!!! It just can’t!!!!” The wisest Cubs fans, and the wisest Democrats, however, know that you have to keep believing. You can’t give up, and you have to have it engraved on your hearts that “This is our year.” Now, the best Cubs fans know you can’t be cocky as you proclaim that. They know that you have to keep encouraging the players to work. The same is true of us. We have to keep the faith, and work like hell.

And you know what? This IS our year. I believe that so strongly that I have written the following, which I fully intend to post here on November 5th. This is a pivotal time in our nation’s history, and I believe that we’re due.

Ya gotta believe.
--------------------------------------------------
Wednesday, November 5th
Today, I am so proud to be an American. Yesterday, Americans went to the polls in record numbers and they proclaimed loudly: ENOUGH. The scales have fallen from their eyes, and they did the right thing. They rejected mediocrity and cynicism and divisiveness, and they embraced true leadership and hope and the idea that we are one country, and we are all Americans. I can’t stop smiling, and I can’t stop crying. We have finally reached that long-awaited moment in our history when the majority have truly judged someone based on the content of their character. It is sweet --achingly sweet. Savour the taste of it, close your eyes and drink it in, and applaud yourself for the hard work you have done that brought us to this moment. From here, we only go forward. No more retreat. One country. Indivisible. With liberty, and justice…..for all.

18. That's the spirit.
No, seriously. I ought to find myself a rich husband who wants me at home barefoot (if not pregnant) so I can have everything I want plus great healthcare and regular vacations and to hell with those who struggle to heat their homes and whose kids will never make it to college.

Gah!
