1. Some folks don't have a pro team to root for
They only have college teams

36. As an FYI ot BTW, I have no favorite pro team and still prefer the pro game.
Polls mean nothing, computers don't decide championships, no handpicked matchups, and simply better football. Lots of bona fide college stars can't make it past the first week of an NFL training camp.

6. I agree. Roll Tide.
I love the Vikings but, the money and commercialism involved and the lack of passion is kinda boring. Give me 93,818 fans in Bryant Denny any day.

13. I agree completely
The NFL left me cold when they let the Browns leave Cleveland. Yeah, they're back, but it isn't the same.

A college president can't just pick up and move a university to squeeze a better deal from the taxpayers.

16. Agree with all of that except the lack of a playoff system.
I love college ball, but the lack of a playoff sucks wet ass.

23. Most reasons, I agree. Commercials have infiltrated, though.
A lot of games are televised now and there are TV timeouts. Ticket price for each of our season seat games at UNC-Chapel Hill is $50--and that's in addition to making a donation to guarantee getting
the same seats on the goal line--high up. Ouch.

There is nothing like the feeling of a fall day in a college stadium, though. I love it.

3. Not playin' for pay
I enjoy both pro and college football, but I lean toward college ball because the players aren't paid. I've never played either, so I'm not saying I "know" how it feels. I have always wondered if guys who are in college play more for the pride of the school team, camaraderie, school spirit, and not the actual paycheck/bonuses.

Any college/former college players want to enlighten me?

And for the record, go HOKIES and 'SKINS! :woohoo:

5. Unless you're U$C
their players usually take a pay cut when they go pro.

8. Something about a Saturday, fall in the air, the school spirit...it sort of calls out to you.
Plus, after New Year's Day (or a few days later, thanks to the BCS :grr:), it's gone!

I do appreciate the occasional Green Bay game in a blizzard, though. :toast:

10. I don't understand people who prefer football of any kind to reading, the arts, or being outside
But, that said, I'm with you - pro football (even for a guy like me who finds sports kinda fucking dumb) is actually fun to watch and get into. College football is boring as hell. And, it's also a symbol of our completely misplaced priorities in our educational system.

24. Quite right!
Hear hear. And it shouldn't just be any form of recreational reading either. It should be serious reading intended to improve one's self, not some trashy pulp mystery or romance novel. Recreation and entertainment is not logical and serves no purpose.

11. I don't get it either. But that's because I don't have a college to root for.
Edited on Mon Sep-08-08 09:01 AM by PeterU
And rooting for a college that doesn't have you or a family member as an alumni....something just doesn't seem right about it. Especially if the college is like 1000 miles away from where you live (**cough cough Notre Dame cough cough**).

Pro ball you get to root for your city, not just a school. It just feels more universal to me.

Plus college football's overtime system sucks big time. Give me heartpounding sudden death over that lame cluster-eff any day.

22. My father went to Northeastern so I tend to root for them.
That's always my Beanpot team.

My friend and I used to go to BU games all the time. They're always fun to watch, and Parker is the best hockey coach in the land, college or pro, in my hockey lovin' opinion.

25. Maybe because their local college team is doing better than their local NFL team?
In my case, just look at this past weekend: 49ers lose 23-13. Cal Bears win 66-3. No contest there, as to which one I'm gonna be more enthusiastic about.

26. I don't know, I love watching USC play Pacific Rim Technical College, or whatever.
At least with college football, 90% of the games have no real mystery about the outcome. You can watch your superteam roll over some votech hairdresser's college and cheer each meaningless and effortless touchdown.

Why waste time watching games where both teams are skilled athletes and the outcome is uncertain? I mean, occasionally you run into such a game in college, but it's rare.

27. I really like the NFL, but
I used to watch local softball baseball teams, and liked them better than pro teams, so I can see the attraction.
There are a few semi-pro football teams developing that might be a pretty interesting compromise.
Also, the Arena football thing is interesting.

34. Arena Football is entertaining as hell!
It's like a hockey game on grass or something. Not sure how I'd describe it. Our AF2 games definitely have a similar vibe to our minor league hockey games.

28. Generally speaking pro might be better on TV, but college games are more fun in person
And living in Detroit also makes college games more enjoyable, televised or in person. Yes, even for a Spartans fan.

29. In the Olden Days.....
We had Saints Season Tickets, back when they played in Tulane Stadium, the tickets were cheap, like $5.00 a game. I could ride my bike to go see the Saints training facility. A couple of the players lived on our very middle class street. In short, people could relate to the players. Not any more.

I went to a small college with no athletic scholarships and football games there were free. The "Stadium" was a big hole in the ground and we sat on the slopes to drink and fall down and generally enjoy a sunny afternoon. When it snowed, we took cafeteria trays down the slopes.....

I can understand people having more loyalty to their College than their local NFL Franchise.

Sometimes, people prefer their football as a game, not overpriced and overexposed hoopla.

31. On Saturdays, with a functioning remote, I can miss nearly all commercials
watching college games. On Sunday it is almost impossible to miss any commercials. I swear that the NFL coordinates every game to take timeouts etc at the same time.
Games anymore have just become commercials interrupted by a pass or two.

32. I like both, but I like college a little better
In part for some of the reasons mentioned in pokerfan's link, but for other reasons as well, including the sheer number of teams and games and storylines that might develop on a given day of college football.

33. I prefer Division III football, as amateur as you can get
Though many DI players will not go on and are doing it for the love of the game, not a big paycheck.
