Today's pet peeve - people who write in books
Irritating. A friend offered me a bunch of study guides for the LSAT but every single one of them has the test parts all marked up - answers circled, underlined, etc. What possible use can that be to me? :grr:

That's bad enough but at least somewhat understandable - what I really hate is getting a book out of the library and someone has underlined parts of it, or made notes in the margins. What kind of moran writes in a library book?

1. I write in all my books.
I don't write in books that don't belong to me. Writing in an LSAT book is
almost a requirement. They aren't prohibitively expensive either.

2. I had borrowed an LSAT book and it was all written in
as well. I spent the first three hours I had it wrestling with an eraser.

3. That annoys the hell out of me.
I lent out a nice medical microbiology reference book that I had paid $130 for as a freaking poor graduate student and I got it back all highlighted and underlined. :grr:

4. I know what you mean. I went through a great deal of time and expense to obtain
some rare first edition books. And when I finally receive them and open them up, the damned authors had gone and written their names in them! Sheesh! :grr: :+

10. Just tear those pages out--you'll increase the books' value
That's a secret known only to hardcore bibliophiles, by the way.

5. Well, I kind of agree with you, but mostly do not
I can totally see how having the answers already identified in the test portion of the text does you little good in figuring out the answer yourself. But in general, I think more people need to write in their own books, fiction and non-. Underline the stuff that makes you think, or get angry. Write down your own ideas and thoughts right next to the words that generated them.

And to be more honest than may be wise, I don't in general have a problem with people who write in library books, as long as they write in pencil and write something worth reading.

7. Depends on who marked it up... My Riverside Shakespeare was filled with glosses and notes
it made my job easier and the person obviously had a brain. Since as an undergrad I needed it for Shakespeare I and II, it worked out well and my notes flow through it as well...

I love that book...

9. I don't know...
If I borrowed the book and then wrote in it, I should be killed.
If I loan the book and you write it in, then you die.

If it's lent to me with writing in, well then I guess that old beggars line applies. I usually only write in books I gift. Or study from.
