Since when is clam chowder red? Heathens.

Creamy and white, with massive hunks of potato, is the only way to be. Serve it in a bread bowl and I'm hooked for life.

Mmmmmmm chowder. :)

2. Blame the Portuguese (and Rhode Island).
It was their idea to add the tomato. So sayeth Alton Brown.

I prefer my chowder white as well. I'm not a big tomato guy.

10. Rhode Island Chowder isn't red
It has a clear broth that they add cream to before serving.

4. Manhattan Clam Chowder is heaven
Particularly when served with fresh oyster crackers at the Oyster Bar in Grand Central Terminal.

The problem with it is it has to be fresh and made well. There is no cream to cover flaws in execution. The canned stuff tastes awful.

5. Yeah, New England style's better.
Manhattan-style is all right, but that sort of recipe works MUCH better with conchs. Next time you're in Florida, get a thing of conch chowder.
