I've had it with my laptop!
Takes longer and longer to boot up, and now, it looks like my screen is going out. The bottom third of it is showing up very faint; about an hour after I turn it on, the full screen finally shows up.

Grrrr. Damn thing isn't even 2 years old!

1. My dear SeattleGirl...
Oh, that sucks!

Not even two years old...

Yikes!

And money is an issue too...x(

Is it still under warranty?

I'm sorry, sweetie...

2. No warranty any more.
We do have a desktop computer, so if this one bites the dust, I won't be completely lost. I really prefer a laptop, though, as I hate being tied to once room.

3. I remember your telling me how much you love yours...
When I got mine, you told me of the joys of moving onto your favorite couch and posting from there!

4. Yeah, it's great, being able to do that.
Right now, I'm downstairs in "my" room, chilling out.

Later, I might be typing on it from the livingroom upstairs.

Loves me a laptop!

5. May need a refresh...
ie save your stuff and reinstall the OS. Could be several things making a machine slow boot.

I assume it is running xp or vista.

And to tell the truth, I have no idea how to do that.

7. most have a recovery cd.
you can save your data and run the recovery cd. Del,IBM, Toshiba, and the other large manufacturers usually come with a recovery cd that has all you need to start fresh.

The other option is taking it in to a geek squad type business and letting them "diagnose" the problem.

The display thing is concerning, laptops use fancy bulbs to light the lcd display. If they go bad that can get expensive.

No machine should fail in 2 years. What model is it (IBM T60 for example)

8. Compaq Presario V6000
And I don't recall getting a recovery CD when I bought it, but I could be mistaken.

9. Here is the link to HP
who bought compaq. You can search their site for your exact model and part number.

From there you can get recovery media.

10. You might want to take it in and get a quote for repair
it might cost a couple of hundred dollars, but it still much cheaper than a new one.

11. One simple fix...
click the Start button, then "Help and Support" then "System Restore"

Follow the instructions, and pick a day you think was before the thing slowed down. You will probably lose stored passwords and cookies, so make sure you have your passwords written down before you restore.

You hear a lot about XP boxes slowing down, and it could be from any number of things. Restore lets you go back to before whatever happened happened. It's saved me from tragedy several times.

(If this doesn't work, you're in trouble.)
