38. I've seen those!

We went on trips to Rocky Mountain National Park in 1968 and 1972, when my grandparents had a summer cabin in Estes Park. My sister retired and moved last year to a house just outside Estes Park. I remember the Never Summer Range from those vacations. I thought it sounded cool and kind of like a forbidden place.

Caucuses, which I went to when I was in Russia. It was 3 1/2 hours straight up, to get to our destination, no guard rails and warning signs about falling boulders, LOL, and I was terrified, but it was well worth the trip...:D

The Catskills cover a really big area; IIRC, the resorts were more downstate (an easier drive from NYC where their clientele came from) and my school was more in the center of the state.

30. Did anyone ever find the treasure?
I remember hearing about that when I lived in Phoenix from 1977 to 1980. It seems like after all this time, someone must have found the treasure. It's not all that big of a mountain, compared to some mountain ranges. That stuff must be buried very, very well for nobody to have found it after all these years.

I've been writing hate mail every day to everyone who blows the tops off those mountains for a few days of energy.
I've seen people making the argument online that the shopping centers and golf courses that could take the place of the old blow-off tops are actually a great thing for People.
It's making me so sick, it's a worse violation than anything else I can think of.. though I'm sure I'll see even worse before long.

Sorry to get Heavy, I feel like those hills are my only real home and I'm scared.

67. Appalachians particularly the Whites in NH
Edited on Sun Aug-03-08 04:42 AM by YankeyMCC
these are old mountains (I'll even accept calling them hills though some peaks are definitely high and steep enough to deserve the term mountain) that humans have lived in and around for millenia. They are "human" sized, they offer a sublime, intricate and wonderful (I literally mean full of wonder here, always a new thing to find to see, a new or different juxtaposition of life and geology)

And if you've seen any of my pictures here you'll have seen just a glimpse of what I mean. Brad Washburn's photos capture it well too, find those. Not to mention the American painters of the 19th century who were inspired by the whites and helped create the American conservation movement with their stunning paintings of the whites.

And where else do you have peaks and trails named after scientists, entomologists, biologists (who study wildflowers) etc...

And then there's the unique alpine zone in the Presidentials...a truly special place.

All the ranges listed are special and have their beauty and majesty but Appalachians and in particular the Whites are special in a unique yet human scale.

on edit: Here's a site of a phonographer/hiker I know who does a good job capturing some of the beauty and specialness of the Whites
