4. Silly, there's no math or science in astrology - it's just making shit up, and selling it.
One of the most unethical of all "professions".

Certainly no physics, though.

16. To construct a chart requires quite a bit of arithmetic and some trig.
The "science" part is mostly observational and psychological. And hypothetical, of course.

17. I would never give it the benefit of being hypothetical - it's just making shit up.
Plain and simple.

Oh, sure, the astrologers might think they're using some kind of system, and they might think that they're doing something "scientific" with it.

But they aren't.

They begin with with inaccurate astronomical data - data that have been proved utterly false and ignorant time and time again - and then they g downhill from there.

Making shit up while pretending they're doing science. That's all it is. If it were done for fun, that would be one thing - but they sell the shit they make up as "truth", taking financial and scientific advantage of the gullible, desperate, and uneducated. And that makes it unethical.

18. Much of the content of astrology is based in mythology, numerology
Edited on Mon Jul-07-08 12:39 PM by RadiationTherapy
and archetypes found in our common consciousness. It is not made up at all. It has very consistent themes and relationships that deal with very universal concepts. It may not resonate with you, but it is certainly not made up whole cloth; it is an ancient and evolving "system".

I do not try to understand the future, but astrology has certainly helped me understand myself if only by exposing me to archetypes and how they translate into everyday life.

24. Numerology is made up shit. Mythology is made up shit (though cool).
It IS made up whole cloth - using inaccurate astronomical "data" to claim that the planets and stars somehow affect our destiny, even though those star and planet charts are WRONG, and demonstrably so.

One doesn't need the astrology to understand archetypes - in fact, the astrology should be a hindrance in archetypal interpretation, because it's totally unnecessary. Mythical archetypes come to us via literature, not astrology (even though some archetypes might have been inspired by astrology way back in the far human past, the astrology is not required to understand them).

Astrology is an ancient system, yes; but it is not evolving. If it were, it would rewrite itself to make use of science and current, accurate, truthful astronomical data. But it doesn't, because it can't. And because probably very few astrologers could actually handle the math or science behind it anyway, because let's face it - if they were smart enough for that, they probably would be in a much different profession. Except for those who are smart enough to know it's all bullshit, but who realize what an easy money-making scheme it is.

25. Yes, much of what you are saying is true, but people can find insight anywhere
Edited on Mon Jul-07-08 01:22 PM by RadiationTherapy
such as in a fictional movie or story. Or a church. Or mother goose.

Finding something insightful and symbolic does not require applying the scientific method to it.

33. The trick is that no one claims that Mother Goose is real
Many astrologers do indeed claim that their made-up shit is the truth, founded in ancient true wisdom.

If they really believe that, then they're self-deluded but not dishonest; if they don't believe it, then they are criminally fraudulent.

34. Of course they can find insight anywhere - that's the beauty of art
in all its forms - literature, painting, theater, movies, and so on.

But, you see, the artists all know it's FICTION.

Tolkien never tried to pass LOTR off as fact.

Astrologers - perhaps I should put the adjective 'criminal' in front of astrologer whenever I use it, though it would be nice if society knew it as an implied modifier - pretend that their made up shit is real.

They don't go "Okay, here's a fun fictional made up way of thinking about stuff that has no actual bearing in reality". They say, "You were born on this day at this time, and so this is who you are" and the more criminal ones then continue with "And this is what will happen to you".

37. I cannot defend con-people. I can only attest that astrology (western.chaldean variety)
is a well thought out, complicated and interrelated system. The fact that it cannot reconcile with scientific knowledge doesn't bother me.

I know all the greek mythos stuff and Shakespeare is extraordinarily boring to me.

Again, I am not promoting astrology, just clarifying that it is not just "made up shit".

36. Astrology is complete bunko.
It's a total sham, foisted upon those who need a security blanket to get through the day and don't like the taste of liquor. I don't buy any of it. But then, I'm a Capricorn, and we tend to be rather skeptical.

If you are serious, I don't think it takes math or physics to know astrology anymore. People use computer programs to figure out charts these days.
