Play some American Music for Independence Day
Anything you want. Let 'er rip :)

Happy Independence Day!

Here is mine. It has been a hec of a week. I miss the ol' man. It's all good though. Good times.

Desperados waiting for a train

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJA4TGOAn98

I played the Red River Valley
He'd sit in the kitchen and cry
Run his fingers through 50 years of livin'
And wonder, "Lord, hell has every well I've drilled gone dry?"

We were friends, me and this old man
We's like desperados waitin' for a train
Desperados waitin' for a train

He's a drifter, a driller of oil wells
He's an old school man of the world
He let me drive his car when he was too drunk to
And he'd wink and give me money for the girls
And our lives was like, some old Western movie
Like desperados waitin' for a train
Like desperados waitin' for a train

From the time that I could walk he'd take me with him
To a bar called the Green Frog Cafe
There were old men with beer guts and dominoes
Lying 'bout their lives while they played
I was just a kid, they all called " His Sidekick"
Just like desperados waitin' for a train
Like desperados waitin' for a train

One day I looked up and he's pushin' sixty
He's got brown tobacco stains all down his chin
Well to me he was a hero of this country
So why's he all dressed up like them old men
Drinkin' beer and playin' Moon and Forty-two
Jus' like desperados waitin' for a train
Like a desperado waitin' for a train

The day 'fore he died he went to see me
I was grown and he was almost gone.
So we just closed our eyes and dreamed us up a kitchen
And sang one more verse to that old song
(spoken) Come on, Jack, that son-of-a-bitch is comin'

We're desperados waitin' for a train
Was like desperados waitin' for a train

1. OK: "American Music" by The Blasters
Edited on Fri Jul-04-08 02:39 PM by Richardo
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oEeQpiryZ1c&feature=related

Well, a U.S. soldier boy on leave in West-Berlin
No music there that rocks, just a thousand violins
They wanna hear some American music, American music
They wanna hear that sound right from the U.S.A.

Well, it can be sweet and lovely, it can be hard and mean
One thing's for sure, it's always on the beam
They wanna hear some American music, American music
They wanna hear that sound right from the U.S.A.

It's a howl from the desert, a scream from the slums
The Mississippi rollin' to the beat of the drums
They wanna hear some American music, American music
They wanna hear that sound right from the U.S.A.

We got the Louisiana boogie and the delta blues
We got country, swing and rockabilly, too
We got jazz, country-western and Chicago blues
It's the greatest music that you ever knew
It's American music, it's American music, it's American music
It's the greatest sound right from the U.S.A.

Well, a US soldier boy has to stop right in his tracks
When he hears that crazy beat, he turns and doubles back
Because they're playing American music, American music
The whole world digs that sound from the U.S.A.

2. American Music by Native Americans
Indigenous - Come on home
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ECe5NJxqHh8

Indigenous are a blues band from South Dakota, and members of the Nakota nation.

You can't get much more American than Native Americans playing the most native of all American music (blues).

3. Prepping for tomorrow's show
:patriot:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=WdTYcnUBADw

She grew up in a Indiana town,
Had a good lookin’ mama who never was around.
But she grew up tall and she grew up right
With them Indiana boys on an Indiana night.

Well she moved down here at the age of eighteen,
She blew the boys away; was more than they’d seen.
I was introduced and we both started groovin’
She said, “I dig you, baby, but I got to keep movin’ - on.
Keep movin’ on.”

Chorus:
Last dance with Mary Jane, one more time to kill the pain.
I feel summer creepin’ in and I’m tired of this town again.

Well I don’t know but I’ve been told, you never slow down, you never grow old.
I’m tired of screwin’ up, tired of goin’ down,
Tired of myself, tired of this town,
Oh my, my, oh hell yes - Honey put on that party dress.
Buy me a drink, sing me a song,
Take me as I come . cause I can’t stay long.

Chorus

There’s pigeons down on Market Square,
She’s standing in her underwear.
Lookin’ down from a hotel room,
Nightfall will be coming soon.
Oh my, my, oh hell yes, you got to put on that party dress.
It was too cold to cry, when I woke up alone.
I hit my last number, I walked to the road.

65. And as long as we're talking Mr. Petty and American songs
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uNgt7U9QrFQ

American Girl (Tom Petty/Mike Campbell)

Well she was an American girl
Raised on promises
She couldn't help thinkin that there
Was a little more to life
Somewhere else
After all it was a great big world
With lots of places to run to
Yeah, and if she had to die
Tryin' she had one little promise
She was gonna keep

Oh yeah, all right
Take it easy baby
Make it last all night
She was an American girl

It was kind of cold that night
She stood alone on her balcony
She could the cars roll by
Out on 441
Like waves crashin' on the beach
And for one desperate moment there
He crept back in her memory
God it's so painful
Something that's so close
And still so far out of reach

Oh yeah, all right
Take it easy baby
Make it last all night
She was an American girl

http://youtube.com/watch?v=38173Xi4TZc

Do you like amercan music
I like american music
Dont you like american music baby
I want you to hold me
I want your arms around me
I want you to hold me baby
Did you do too many drugs
I did too many drugs
Did you do too many drugs too baby
You were born too late
I was born too soon
But every time I look at that ugly moon
It reminds me of you
It reminds me of you ooh ooh ooh
I need a date to the prom
Would you like to come along
But nobody would go to the prom with me baby
They didnt like american music
They never heard american music
They didnt know the music was in my soul baby
You were born too soon
I was born too late
But every time I look at that ugly lake
It reminds me of me
It reminds me of me
Do you like american music
We like american music
I like american music baby
Do you like american music
We like all kinds of music
But I like american music best
Baby you were born too late
And I was born too late
But every time I look at that ugly lake
It reminds me of me
It reminds me of me
Do you like american music
It reminds me of me
Do you like american music...

19. Weeee!
;)

:hi:

They told you in school about freedom
But when you try to be free they never let ya
They said "it's easy , nothing to it"
And now the army's out to get ya
Sixty nine America in terminal stasis
The air's so thick it's like drowning in molasses
I'm sick and tired of paying these dues
And i'm finally getting hip to the American ruse

I learned to say the pledge of allegiance
Before they beat me bloody down at the station
They haven't got a word out of me since
I got a billion years probation

Sixty nine America in terminal stasis
The air's so thick it's like drowning in molasses
I'm sick and tired of paying these dues
And i'm sick to my guts of the American ruse
Phony stars, oh no! crummy cars, oh no!
Cheap guitars, oh no! Joe's primitive bar... nah!

Rock'em back, Sonic !
The way they pull you over it's suspicious
Yeah, for something that just ain't your fault
If you complain they're gonna get vicious
Kick in the teeth and charge you with assault
Yeah, but i can see the chickens coming home to roost
Young people everywhere are gonna cook their goose
Lots of kids are working to get rid of these blues
cause everybody's sick of the American ruse

Well well well , take a look around !
Well well well , take a look around !
Well well well , take a look around !
Well well well , take a look around !
Well well well , take a look around !

13. How About A Perfect Circle's Version of "Imagine"?
Edited on Fri Jul-04-08 04:15 PM by Southpawkicker
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jpqKA9_ddFk

A Perfect Circle.... Imagine
Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today...

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace...

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world...

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one

30. American classical composers:
George Gershwin, of course!

Scott Joplin--brought ragtime from the honky-tonk to the concert hall

Aaron Copeland--You've heard his music even if you don't know it, if only in ads for the Beef Council

Samuel Barber--Adagio for Strings and other melodic pieces

John Adams--quirky music often based on contemporary events

Leonard Bernstein--needs no introduction

Libby Larsen--one of America's most widely performed women composers, and a Minnesotan

Howard Hansen--wrote symphonic music

Amy Beach--19th century concert pianist and composer

George Herbert--wrote operettas and instrumental music

Edgar Meyer--contemporary bass player and composer

Louis Gottschalk--19th century New Orleans composer

William Billings--early American composer of choral music

Bernard Herrman--wrote soundtracks for Alfred Hitchcock's most popular films

You could put together a pretty good day of radio with these composers.

32. THIS LAND IS YOUR LAND

http://www.state.ok.us/~arts/capitolart/permart/paintings/wilson/guthrie.html">

THIS LAND IS YOUR LAND
words and music by Woody Guthrie

Chorus:
This land is your land, this land is my land
From California, to the New York Island
From the redwood forest, to the gulf stream waters
This land was made for you and me

As I was walking a ribbon of highway
I saw above me an endless skyway
I saw below me a golden valley
This land was made for you and me

Chorus

I've roamed and rambled and I've followed my footsteps
To the sparkling sands of her diamond deserts
And all around me a voice was sounding
This land was made for you and me

Chorus

The sun comes shining as I was strolling
The wheat fields waving and the dust clouds rolling
The fog was lifting a voice come chanting
This land was made for you and me

Chorus

As I was walkin' - I saw a sign there
And that sign said - no tress passin'
But on the other side .... it didn't say nothin!
Now that side was made for you and me!

Chorus

In the squares of the city - In the shadow of the steeple
Near the relief office - I see my people
And some are grumblin' and some are wonderin'
If this land's still made for you and me.

Chorus (2x)

56. Yes.
I have to thank DU for turning me on to McMurtry's music. He's a great talent, "uneasy listening" raised to an art form.

When I still lived in the States, these were the songs I played every July 4 from about 1974 onward.
Sigh. Nothing changed.

Yankee Rose
(David Lee Roth/Steve Vai)

Are you ready for the new sensation?
Well, here's the shot heard 'round the world.
All you backroom boys salute when her flag unfurls.
Well, guess who's back in circulation?
Now, I don't know what you may have heard
but what I need right now's the original goodtime girl.

She's a vision from coast to coast,
sea to shining sea.
Hey, sister, you're perfect host.

Show me your bright lights and your city lights, all right.
I'm talkin' 'bout the Yankee Rose.
Bright lights in your city lights, all right.
I'm talkin' 'bout it.

When she walks, watch, the sparks will fly,
firecrackin' on the fourth of July.
No sad songs tonight, something's in the air.
She's a real state of independents.
So pretty when her rockets glare,
still provin' any night that her flag is still there.

She's a vision from coast to coast,
sea to shining sea.
Hey, sister, you're perfect host.

Show me your bright lights and your city lights, all right.
I'm talkin' 'bout the Yankee Rose.
Bright lights in your city lights, all right.
I'm in love with the Yankee Rose.

Ah, she's beautiful, alright,
mm, nothin' like her in the whole world.
Yeah, she's right on time, I'm on the case.
Pick up the phone, no time to waste.
She got the beat and here's a little bit comin' your way.

Bright lights, city lights...

And for you Spanish speakers....

68. I'm late to the party so I'll post this lovely song
it has pretty much nothing to do with 7/4 though unless you think in terms of the last 8 years and the changes coming... and that is quite a stretch. :7

I would have replied to everyone, but the parallel universes were colliding last night. I saw at least two of everything. No pink elephants though.
