Why do studio executives think 14 year olds have worse taste than 8 year olds?
I was thinking of this lately. I haven't seen Kung Fu Panda, but I haven't heard a bad review yet, and that's only from people my age. And of course every movie Pixar has made, more childrens' movies, have been fantastic.

On the other hand, take a look at most teen-orientated movies. Just now we have Zohan, The Love Guru, that rather stupid looking and no doubt incredibly inferior to the TV show Get Smart, and the "________ Movie" series + Meet The Spartans. Aka, PG-13 comedies aimed at teens usually tend to be complete nonsense consisting mostly of sex jokes and people getting kicked in the nuts. I suppose Juno was good, but that was actually more aimed at adults for the most part (It certainly didn't have a teen-orientated marketing campaign.)

So why do studio execs think as kids grow up their taste gets WORSE?

1. Generally, they do.

Teenagers want to act more "mature" than 8 year olds. Therefore, they're attracted to things centered around sex and vulgarity, since they figure that's what adults are all about. Hence "sophomoric humor."

Kind of a sad statements on adults, when you think about it.

2. I've noticed the phenomena...
The stuff my daughter watched when she was 7 was great. The stuff she watches now is just unbearable. Part of it might be that parents of younger kids have more of a say in what they view, whereas parents of the 13 year old needn't be considered as much. (I feel I'd be less that honest not to point out here that - at 45 - sexual innuendo and nut kicks still crack me up!)
