So in midsummer, where is the best romantic getaway in the United States?
I'd say Hawaii probably, but lets limit it to the 48 adjacent states

Where would you go?

My preferences would be somewhere that isn't scorching hot or humid, just nice and romantic.

Any ideas?

46. Yes, San Diego is often hot and humid in July and August.
The summer of 2006 was absolutely sweltering, 2007 not quite as bad but still pretty hot and humid. Right after Labor Day is an excellent time to visit San Diego, it's still fairly hot but much less humid - still great beach weather (we call it the "local summer" because all the tourists have left and the kids are back in school, the beaches and roads are much less crowded and prices are lower.

45. You're right about the breezes, but shopping at Jerry's Market is VERY expensive...
You also have to pay $6.00 for each car going on to the island, and when you get there, the traffic can be horrendous.

Aside from that, it's paradise!

Cordially,

Radio Lady Ellen in Oregon

Maybe you can go to Wine Country. The closer you stay to the coast, the more pleasant the climate. It's not usually humid.

42. high humidity is usually not a problem in CA
low humidity can be- "fire season"

Being a native, I suggest almost anywhere on the coast. Be aware that the northern California coast can be really cold in summer due to thick fog. So you might want to consider farther inland or the central coast. The NorCal mountains can be really nice in summer, although the nights can get nippy. Lassen Volcanic National Park has always been one of my favorite places.

23. Some favorites of mine:
Of course I'm going to point out that I find crowds un-sexy so I go where they ain't. It really depends who you (and she) are.

Mystic, CT. - Quaint shoreline town that looks the same as it did in 1950 which is mostly the same as it looked in 1850...except with electricity. Lots of sailboats to rent...it's on LI sound so the water is placid.

Northampton, MA. - College town. Fun for a get-away day. Lots of cozy restaurants and neat shops. Probably a little too young for you. Probably the busiest place on this list.

Cape Ann, MA. - The bay state's other cape. On the ocean. Much the same...less people. Less expensive.

Palacios, TX. - I went to stay at my bosses' vacation house here. Quiet, laid-back, not much to do except enjoy the scenery. Best sunrise I ever saw.

New Orleans, LA. - Used to be in my opinion the single most "old-world" romantic city in the US. Haven't been since Katrina, I'm guessing it no longer is. You might want to look into it though...and it's a good conscience choice since tourism is what is going to rebuild that city.

Any number of small mountain towns in the Berkshires or Adirondacks. I have a thing for mountains and sky-views though. Most are great for hiking and have cozy homey local restaurants with from-scratch food. Also, there isn't much to do except admire nature and get "natural". (I mean frisky, not naked. Though one requires the other and I have spent my share of naked time in the woods.)

And

I know you said the US but there are few places on Earth as romantic as Montreal, CN.

29. I would second New Orleans, except that the OP specified midsummer.
Hot, hot, HOT -- and humid to boot.

Haven't been since Katrina, I'm guessing it no longer is.

Most of the neighborhoods that define New Orleans as old-world and romantic -- the French Quarter, Faubourg Marigny, Garden District and so on -- did not flood. They are collectively known as "the sliver on the river", or better still, the "Isle of Denial".

The neighborhoods that did flood are the ones where ordinary New Orleanians live -- the ones who serve you your gumbo, play jazz on the street corners, etc. They're having a tough time of it still. As one prominent local blogger (who just resurfaced at DU) says, "We Are Not OK".

All of this is, however, moot, because we're dealing with midsummer. Temps and humidities are pretty much both guaranteed to be in the 90s daily. On the bright side, hotels should be a steal; even off-season, rates are down, because people still think there's no longer a reason to go.

40. I'm really glad you responded...
I had typed-in that you would be the one who would know best...but I then took it out because I didn't know how you'd feel about being appointed the status ambassador of your city and I didn't want you to feel called-out or put on the spot.

I knew the weather but I always thought of it as a plus. Hot, sticky and sweaty means thin layers of linen and breathable cotton in minimal clothing. Light bedding and open windows overlooking the French Quarter or scenic views. Energy and restlessness. Night-owl lifestyle since evening is the most bearable part of the day. I find that all to be sexy. Also, I just realized that I probably shouldn't have read all that Anne Rice during my formative years.

41. Actually there are several current New Orleans residents at DU
few if any, though, are "Lounge lizards". Swamp Rat, funkybutt and others are out there somewhere. Then there's Bosshog, who lives just across the line in MS but seems to get into the Quarter every weekend or two.

the status ambassador of your city

zOMG! Considering that it hasn't even been "my city", according to the Postal Service at any rate, for seventeen years this month, that is quite a high honor indeed! I do believe I shall share that with the various NOLA blogs at my earliest opportunity...

38. There's a state park on Orcas Island
(the upside down u-shaped island). The highest point is 2400-foot-high Mt. Constitution on the top of which is a stone observation tower. The tower provides panoramic views of the surrounding islands and mountains.

So I'm up there one evening watching an incredible sunset with my girlfriend when this woman and her family show up. She takes one glance at the sunset and scoffs, "I've seen better." Fortunately, she didn't stay long.

View from tower I found on the web:

The sun is almost 90 degrees on top of you, you fry fast and it is pretty intense. You want the upper Midwest, the woods of Wisconsin and Minnesota, the open plains of North Dakota, or the Great Lakes region.
