i have to tow my car today and am not at all looking forward to it
my volvo gave me the finger earlier this week and decided she wasn't going to start (we think it's the fuel pump relay but aren't quite sure). so dad and i are going to hitch her to the back of our buick wagon and tow her to his house. we've done this a few times before but i am apprehensive about this time because we have to get on the main road in town and my dad wants me in the back this time, something i've never done. the last thing i want to do is smash into the back of the buick

let's see if i can make it through this without crying

1. Volvos: "Boxy, but good (and safe)."
Seriously, honey, you're gonna be totally okay. If you smash into the back of a Buick, you'll be perfectly fine. The Buick, like the USS Montana, might want to divert its course, re: http://www.splashvision.com/video/3541_Divert-your-Course.html

(My mother-in-law drives a Volvo station wagon -- indestructible, on par with a lighthouse.

"Metamucil — it helps you go to the toilet. If you don't use it, you'll get cancer and die."

as opposed to a tow bar?

8. Don't worry about that
As long as both ends are tied to a frame member, the inevitable jerking won't hurt anything.

Just be sure you have good distance between you and the Buick — a car length, if possible. Watch its brake lights, turn on your flashers and don't go faster than 25 or 30. Oh, and he's not to accelerate quickly.

I guess all that's pretty obvious, though, huh? I'm just tryin' to be a Guy. :silly:

11. Just thought o' somethin' else
Assuming the Volvo has power brakes, be very aware that it'll take much more pedal pressure to stop or slow down.

You'll be fine.

22. It won't have the power assist, no
However, steering with the engine off usually isn't that much more difficult, unless you're trying to parallel park. :D

25. Most folks can't
I don't remember if it was part of my first driving test (back when we started the engine with a hand crank), but we did learn how to do it in drivers' ed. It's a pretty simple formula, but I guess it isn't taught anymore.

19. good time to invest in $45 for AAA road service
Seriously. The time and grief you'll spend on towing an aging Volvo will be much greater than the $45. They'll tow it, they'll jump start it, they'll even bring you gas if you run out.

It is one of life's really good bargains.

I've had aging Volvos and love them. I would never be without AAA.
