2. Left field, please.
I batted clean up (4th) for our law firm. It was slow pitch.

I've watched some of the women's fast pitch stuff, and I don't think I could hit off some of those ladies.

you can keep your eye on it. I will give my Dad credit. He can (back in the day) throw a hell of a knuckler both in baseball and slow pitch, high arc softball...YES, it can be done.

http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=&imgrefurl=http://wings.avkids.com/Book/Sports/advanced/knuckleball-01.html&h=357&w=500&sz=48&hl=en&start=5&tbnid=SJcCGdUurIkyKM:&tbnh=93&tbnw=130&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dknuckleball%26hl%3Den%26rlz%3D1T4ADBF_enUS243US243

Knuckleball

First, we need to understand that a knuckleball is different than a "standard" curve ball. The knuckleball is the most difficult pitch to master. The knuckleball is thrown with no spin and at a slower speed. The ball appears to "dance" in the air as it leaves the pitcher's hand and on the way to the batter.

The ball moves through the air in an unpredictable fashion. At first, some people thought the "dance" was caused by passing breezes. However, the most likely reason for the "dance" is a very slow spin. Researchers have learned that a slight change in the orientation (position) of the ball with respect to the air flow results in dramatic changes in the forces acting on the ball. Not only does the magnitude (strength) of the force change, but the direction also changes. This is why the ball seems to dance.

How the forces change magnitude and the direction of the baseball is not known. However, one theory is that the stitches in the ball play an important part. The stitches most likely cause turbulence on and around the surface of the ball. The flow separation is reduced. As the ball slowly rotates it may change to laminar (smooth) flow, which is more separated. This altering state of flow from laminar to turbulent (and separated to attached) could cause the forces on the ball to fluctuate (change) thereby causing the ball to "dance".

It is important to note that even if the pitcher throws the ball without any spin, the flow changes created by the stitch pattern of the ball will cause the ball to spin.

18. Hurler (slow pitch)
In little league, I started out catching but moved to third. As an adult, I started out in left field, but after 20+ years, I let the youngsters shag the flies; now I pitch. Don't have the power I used to, so nowadays I hit 2nd or 5th, depending upon who's hot. I'm usually hot... :D

Our first game is this Tues. :applause:

Hey, I'm slow afoot and left handed, so my options are kind of limited!

I'll bat in the 6 or 7 spot. I'm more of a line drive hitter than a pure power guy. Sort of a Kevin Youkilis with love handles...

57. I can catch or play third
That is, I could 20 years ago. :)

Since nobody's signed up for third yet, I'll take that.

Doesn't matter where I bat. All I hit are ground balls and soft line drives.

Let's make it slopitch. Otherwise, somebody'll bring in a ringer from the NCAA, and I ain't fixin' to hit anything goin' 70 mph from 45 feet. :scared:

65. I never saw Abbott pitch, btw
About the same time softball season started in her freshman year in high school, I went from sports to the city desk. Here's what I missed:

One of the most sought after pitchers in the nation, Abbott averaged over 300 strikeouts in her three seasons as a prep star at North Salinas High School in Salinas, Calif. In her junior season, the southpaw tossed seven perfect games, while compiling a 0.17 ERA. She threw back-to-back perfect games in the Division I CCS playoffs of that year, striking out 14 of 15 batters in her first contest and 18 in the seven-inning championship game.

I did see quite a bit of her predecessor, though — Jennifer Deering, a three-sport athlete who went on to pitch at Cal and is now pitching coach at Boston University.

Here's something I forgot about Deering: She struck out 49 Gilroy High batters in one of the epic prep softball games of all time; it went 34 innings and had to be played over two days, three weeks apart. :D

63. Medic and Dugout Mom.
I do an amazing job of keeping the dugout running and I am very good with an ice pack. My most recent experience has been coaching and running a dugout full of 9 and 10 year olds--so a DU team should be no huge change or challenge. Right now I am on IR, and that seems to be the most likely place for me until my blown ankle heals up. I am just now tapering off the crutches--so I probably have a couple more weeks sidelined.

If you need to pick up players later in the season, I used to play out in right field, and I usually put the ball in play when I bat. Put me wherever you need to in the lineup. If you are playing fast pitch I am usually good for some nice Texas Leaguers, and if it is slow pitch I promise to keep it on the ground and away from the runners.

Can I bring my water displacement bat if we play slow pitch? They are legal in some places and not in others...

75. As I got older, I started rubbing down with Sportscreme before games
and practices. I'd slather the stuff all over my legs, then stretch. Saved a hell of a lot of misery. :)

One day when I was about 24 and stupid, I didn't rub down or stretch or anything, and caught 14 innings that included a full-tilt collision with the pitcher while chasing a foul pop.

It was two days before I could walk properly.

As a medic you do the best you can for the team--and trust me if a sparkly bandaid will cure a ten year old girl, a vat of sportscream and a rubberband will do fine for an adult male.

But if they get tagged, they're 'it' and they have to count to 50 before they can start tagging other people, right? :P

A couple of frat guys from Abilene
drove out all night to see Robert Earl Keen
at the KPIG Swine and Sworea Dance.
They wore baseball caps and khaki pants.
They wanted cigarettes, so to save a little money they bought one off this hippie that smelled kinda funny.
And next thing they knew they were both pretty hungry and pretty thirsty too

So they sent in Brad 'cause he looked the oldest.
He got a case of beer and a candy bar, walked over to where all the registers are
laid his fake I.D. on the counter top.
The clerk looked, and turned to look back up and stopped.
He said "Son, I ain't gonna call the cops, but I'm gonna have to keep this card"
the guys both took it pretty hard.

Sleepy John, claimed to be the one from the Robert Earl song.
So they gave him all their cash-he bought em some brews.
Was a beautiful day out in Santa Cruz
They were feelin' so good it shoulda been a crime.
The crowd was cool, and the band was prime.
They made it back up front to their seats just in time to they could sing with all their friends "the road goes on forever

Played there as a kid for many years and was good enouygh to get a small college scholarship offer just after my sophomore year - before I tore my ankle up the following year. Had a strong and accurate arm. Never was a strong hitter. But I'm a dman good bunter. Fearless even with two strikes.

It's been awhile. Playing again might be a death wish. I hurt just imagining the possibilities. Maybe I should just be the relief catcher - and designated bunter.

If there is a man pitiching then we need a woman catcher and vice versa...so good deal. Welcome aboard :toast:

125. Also, according to the rules, there is no bunting in softball!
Hey TA, in your area, do you begin with a 1-1 count? We do, and we also have 1 courtesy foul, and then it's a K.

am I understanding you correctly? What is the purpose/theory behind that? are you talking about for the guys? what about infield fly rule...do you have that? also, seems like there is a rule about over the fence being an atuomatic out on the power hitters....been a while...need to find my old rule book

4 fouls and you're out.

131. Speeds up the game. Makes the pitchers through strikes. Makes the hitters hit.
Most other baseball rules apply, including infield fly.

As per HRs, there are many variants-- it all depends on the league. I'll played in unlimited HRs, 3 limit, 4 limit (additional ones either counting as strikes or outs, once against depending on league). I've also played in a league that had a wild "ratcheting" system. Your team hits an HR, then after that, they are outs. But if the other team hits an HR, then you are able to hit another. In theory there could be dozens of HRs.

We are the same with fouls, only the number is 3. The second foul is referred to as the "courtesy foul."

133. okay,, gotcha...
I have never played the 1-1 rule. I have seen "over the fence" handled a lot of ways. Three strikes and Four fouls,,,that is the way I am used to playing. Do you guys plays round the clock tournaments? We don't want anyone hurrying up our games for us :D sounds like sacrilege to me

139. "Round the clock?" Don't know what that means. All night tourneys? Sounds fun!
In the leagues I'm in, there is a 1 hour time limit. That's simply for logistics. Usually 3 games are scheduled a night. No inning can be started after 1 hour. Five inning minimum. Many times we don't reach 7 innings. In the event of a tie after one hour, the innings begin with 1 out and a man on second.

143. yes, takes all weekend to play the tournament
double elimination...it is hell to come up and win from the loser's bracket. Although, I have played on a team that has accomplished that very thing :woohoo:

yes. 5 inning minimum.

also seems like there is a rule about being so many runs ahead at the end of five...then the game is over.

:wtf: man on second and one out :wtf: Forget that!!

PLAY BALL!

153. Okay, that's basically just a regular weekend tournament. Oh yeah, I've played
in many of those! Three brackets- B, C, and D. You play three, then you get placed in a bracket where you then play double elim. There are 3 final tourney Champs. Guaranteed 5 games.

Games begin at 8am and run all day through until 10pm. Sunday's begin again at 8am, and the championships are usually finished by 5pm.

130. Never heard of that before
The summer after I torn up my ankle I umpired softball games for kids age 6 to 16 in my little town. I was THE umpire. There was no budget for field umps in our little town. I knew the rules very well at the time. Bunting was allowed. Bunting foul with two strikes was an out.

Granted it's been awhile and I suppose the rules could have changed. But no bunting? Seriously? Bunting is a life skill....

Little League (I hope!)

145. OK
We played softball - but not slow pitch.

Our rules were essentially like baseball except we played with a softball which had to be pitched underhand. We did allow bunting and base stealing.

Bunting

There is no bunting, or "chopping" down on the ball (batter is ‘out’).

142. Hey Skip! I wanna play right field!
I'm a righty, fielding and batting. I'll gladly hit down around 7th or 8th if you need to fill a hole there!

I can also be a utility outfielder. I'll play left and center... Just don't make me play too much center because I'm not great at diving catches yet. :P

150. No matter what i'm playing, I'm always either behind the plate or in the net
Slow-pitch is a hell of a lot more fun, and means that you can enjoy the occasional 'adult beverage' between at-bats.

Put me in the line-up batting 8th... the 2nd 'clean up.'

170. If there's one thing I still do exceedinly well on the softball field...
...it's the flip at 2nd on a 6-4-3 or a 5-4-3 double play. I was blessed with a pretty strong arm, so I get it out of my glove and to first pretty damn quick.

171. Third base here.
Or First base.

I would love to be a shortstop, but I have no range.

I can bat 6th or 7th.

I prefer fastpitch.
