1. There's going to be some serious America bashing...
Since the prick in the White House has pretty much fucked up our relationship with the rest of the world.

3. Why fall for the corporatist b.s.?
I am supposed to like the Olympics. The corporations tell me that the Olympics are important. However, I really dislike the Olympics. First, any sport that requires judges is not really a sport. More like an activity. Second, the Olympics are so self-important. They really think that they are a force for good in the world when it is a club for fascists (really, the last head was a strong supporter of Franco) and rich na'er do wells. Third, it is impossibly corrupt. Fourth, I do not like winter sports by and large (except hockey).

How would I improve the Olympics? I would not. I would end them all.

4. There's no denying that it is just a corporate machine
But I don't give a shit, for me It's all about the athletes. And not all the sports are judged...in fact few are.

5. I don't support the athletes
Why am I supposed to care about someone who is supposed to represent my country just because of a uniform? Nonsense.

There are athletes I like and support with my money. The reasons are multifold, but none are because they represent me or my country in some phony competition. I submit that Michael Irvin is 10x the patriot than any Olympic athlete.

6. Thanks (wrings Amish piss out of Wheaties) a lot!
So don't watch 'em.

I hate the hype too. and the fact that the events I want to see are on in the middle of the night.
I catch the highlights on Shortwave and spare myself the never-ending Coke/Nike/McDonald's parade.

9. NBC coverage blows chunks
Edited on Mon Feb-16-04 03:41 PM by midnight armadillo
First off, the every two year schedule is far inferior to the old every four years for both winter/summer games. It always felt like a bigger deal when they were every 4.

NBC's coverage of the Olympics is so painfully pathetic that it defies description. Most events consist of 25 minutes of biographical material (fuzzy shots of athlete training, at home, discussion of how they overcame quadruple amputation, childhood leukemia, and the death of their cat in order to compete) mixed 50/50 with McDonald's (?!?!) commercials, followed by 5 min of the gold medal winning match/race/etc.:puke:

If they insist on time-shifting all the events all over the place to show gymnastics from 5-10pm every night again I will projectile vomit at the TV.

Plus they never cover the two core Olympic events, wrestling and weight lifting. (Go Shane Hamman!)

10. We see much of it live on CBC....too bad you can't get their coverage.

17. I agree
but there will be plenty who complain about how "jingoistic" American fans are, as if they are not allowed to root for their country's athletes, but everyone else can.

14. Hardened cynic though I am, I actually wept during the opening ceremony
for the Sydney Olympics - the two Korea teams marched in together, carrying a single flag together. It was more symbolic than meaningful in the end, but what a symbol! I'm an old Korea Peace Corps volunteer, by the way, & my wife is Korean - hence the tears.

Howsomeever - I'd really like to watch some wrestling, some fencing, some weight lifting (last time around I got to see the very small very strong female weight lifters final - just amazing) - something other than scrawny small female gymnasts with artificially delayed puberty and the american basketball team.

21. I am, and I'm going!
Damn, I ran into the anti-Olympics thread first and posted my plans there.

Anyway, I'm thrilled to be Athens bound, even if it necessarily means fewer rounds of golf in the next six months. Save and save some more. Olympic food prices are always hysterical. In Barcelona '92, a large Pizza Hut pan pizza set me back $36!

Only thing I don't like about the Olympics is the Dream Team basketball garbage. But in late '86 I predicted that likelihood, in print. Our main hoops advantage over the rest of the world was always style, not ability. When our colleges adopted the pathetic 3-point shot in '86, our huge stylistic edge was immediately forfeited and near-parity with the rest of the amateur hoops world the inevitable residue.
