Need help! The songs on my iPod are all up in my house with disease (all three)!1!!

:(

Seriously though, the songs are all messed up; I'm not sure if I can explain this well, but it's like part of the song plays at normal speed, and another part is still playing at normal speed but is lagging a split second behind. Or something. Sometimes it sounds... um... "watery," if that makes any sense.

I've already tried to re-sync it, which didn't work, then restored it to factory settings which wiped everything clean, and reinstalled all the songs. Still having the same problem. I tried to see if there were other suggestions at iPod help sites, but I've already tried everything they recommend. Bummer, man. Anybody have any other ideas?

For the record it's an iPod mini, a few years old. And it still holds a pretty good battery charge.

Thank you for any assistance you may so generously offer!

:hi:

1. How loaded up is it?
Meaning how much memory is being used/taken up?

I mean, don't hard drives slow down a little accessing memory when it's chuck-a-bluck full?

Just a theory, but I'm an idiot. Feel free to discount.

2. It's a 4 GB, and it's got 180 MB free.

It started happening right after the last time I synced it, and the only difference that time is that I added one song to a playlist.

3. I'm on a limb here
I still think that if you have a 4 gig HD and you run it to more than 75%, you're looking at a slowdown.

I don't really trust the HD driven MP3 drives. I've got a Zen for that reason.

Sexy.

4. If it's a 4GB Nano, it shouldn't have a HD. Nanos have flash memory.*
* At least I'm pretty sure they do.

Only the larger iPods have HDs.

My suggestion is to google the issue and set about looking through the myriad forums that will be the result. I had an issue with my Nano, and found the solution in an apple tech forum.

5. Hey. It's an old iPod Mini.

I got it free when I bought my laptop a few years ago, and now it's beyond even the extended warranty.

I did google the issue before I came here, and tried the suggestions I could find, including wiping the whole thing clean and reinstalling/reformatting everything. But I will look around online some more. Failing that I will bring it in to an Apple store the next time I travel in that direction. Those guys are pretty helpful. I'll just be an insufferable whiney baby about not being able to use it until it gets fixed. Heh. Thanks.

:hi:

I *thought* I was having a battery issue with the old Mini, so I took it in a while ago. They didn't have the right testing equipment to find out for sure, so they ended up giving me a brand spankin' new 3rd gen Nano, which I had been coveting :7 :bounce:

...AND letting me keep my Mini. :wow: So now the Mini is kind of my spare anyway.

God I love Apple!

:loveya:

6. That would be a major "my bad" if Nanos had flash.
I'm totally discriminating on iPods here, thinking they are all HD based.

8. For the record, I'm not a fan of the HD iPods either, although I have one.
I have a 4 year old 20GB model. I don't use the hell out of it which is probably why it works today. I do like my nano and shuffle though. I will further admit that both Creative and Sansa are making nice products these days.

10. I'll try taking some of the music out.

Maybe that will bring everything up to speed. Unless the whole problem is limited specifically to the last song I loaded, John Cougar's "I Need a Lover." Then I'm screwn because I'm not taking that song out. No freakin way.

=sigh= Unless I have to. x(

Hot Stuff. :7

12. Dumb question. Have you upgraded the Nano's firmware recently?
Edited on Fri Mar-21-08 09:49 PM by leeroysphits
If you have not then do so.

If you have then look up the firmware version on google along with the most concise description of your problem (think keywords) you can come up with (this might make the search results narrow enough to find a specific solution or work around for your particular issue.)

Good luck.

Edited for clarity.

15. Hey, thanks.

It's an Apple "Mini" though, and when I restored it, the troubleshooting website said that I might get a prompt for which version of the software I wanted it to install. But I didn't get a prompt, I guess it just went ahead and picked the appropriate software for my model.

Thank you for your helpful suggestions, I think I will have to poke around on google some more.

16. You might try putting it in disk mode...
and formatting it with your computer as a stand alone drive. Once that's done, disconnect, reboot and reconnect, then allow itunes to restore it. My 20g G3 wouldn't come back from the functionally disabled any other way till I did that to it.

28.  = UPDATE =

Thanks everybody. Turns out the iPod it not the source of the problem, it's the third-party earbuds I was using with them. Duh. Oh well, at least they will be easier to deal with than a broken iPod.

Thanks again.
