Frisbee Golf, Anyone ?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disc_golf

Disc golf (sometimes called Frisbee golf, or frolf) is a disc game in which individual players throw a flying disc into a basket or at a target. According to the Professional Disc Golf Association, "The object of the game is to traverse a course from beginning to end in the fewest number of throws of the disc."<1>

Disc golf is similar to traditional golf and uses much of the same rules and terminology. As in ball golf, a course usually consists of 18 holes. Unlike ball golf, most courses are located in public parks and are free to play, although some courses require a nominal fee, and the sport requires inexpensive discs instead of costly clubs and balls. <2> The modern disc golf target consists of a metal basket with chains hanging over it and was invented in 1976.<[br />

1. I used to play all the time....
But my disability won't let me anymore. I helped design and build the original course in Sacramento, Shady Oaks in Orangevale. For a course near you go here: http://www.dgcoursereview.com/

My home course is the home course for five of the top 20 players in the world. My friends have a proshop there now too.

My oldest son is a great player and is trying to become a pro disc golfer.

This week and next, at my home course, we have a major tourney with all of the top pros coming to play.

Purses are now getting to be something worth shooting for with this week's tourney paying over $1,000 to the winner of the Men's open. There are different pro divisions, Mens open, Womens open, Masters, grandmasters and youth.

As someoen that played both bal and sisc gold, for me disc golf is a lot more athletic to play. It is nothing like throwing a frisbee, but it a lot more physical. It is easier to putt though. Most of the couses have trees in the way of a hole.

7. The city of Richmond set a new course just last year
and apperently it gets quite a lot of play. The one time we went to that park there were several groups playing.

I played half a year of ultimate oh what 10 years ago-half the team never showed up so the 7 of us had to run the whole game, no fun. I stopped going to games after a while.

8. The game is never referred to as Frisbee Golf or FROLF....
by the people who play it. Frisbee is a brand name for a product made by Wham-O that has not been used in the sport for over 20 years. The funny thing is, the inventor of the Frisbee, Ed Headrick, also invented the game of disc golf. I played a few rounds myself with "Steady Eddy" years ago. even he did not throw frisbees but did manufacture his own line of golf discs. When he died, he asked that his ashes be mixed with the plastic to make his own specialty discs. Those discs are now worth a lot of money among collectors. And yes, there are disc golf disc collectors.

Now, the game is played with specialty discs made for the sport. Every golfer above the rank of one disc wonder, has a bag full of discs, one that goes left, ones that go right, ones you throw into the wind, against the wind, rollers and putters. Like ball golf, every disc has a diffferent purpose and is used in certain situations.

There are quite a few different companies that manufacture golf discs. Innova,Discraft and others, just like golf. The bags are specialty bags made for the disc golfer also, and there is a full line of products and equipment made for the sport. This is the website for Final9, the largest on course proshop in the US, owned by my good friends, both of whom are also former World Champions and pro golfers.
