2. It sort of recalls Heirnonymus Bosch's work, particular the bird like creatures in

The Last Judgment.

Beckman remained in Europe during the Second World War. At one time he was the most famous painter in Germany, but when Hitler came to power his works were classified as "degenerate" and confiscated.

The Hell of Birds was painted in 1938, a year after it became more or less illegal for him to display his works.
