8. Well, the "holy" part was that it was Christian...
...as opposed to the pre-Constantinian empire. Every Emperor since the fall of the western Roman Empire has fancied himself the successor of Augustus and the head of the new western empire. Charlemagne whose Frankish empire actually included the city of Rome started the whole HRE thing. After its dissolution, various contenders fought for the title of Emperor of the Romans (apparently forgetting that the office was already occupied in Constantinople). The word Kaiser, the title of the H.R. Emperors, means "Caesar" in German. Likewise, "Czar" or "Tsar" means "Caesar" in Russian.

In those days, Germany was more of a geographic expression than a nation. The numerous small kingdoms there were a kind of empire under the unifying guidance of the emperor and the western (later Catholic) church. If one asked the typical medieval western European person on the street what his or her nationality was, the most likely answer was "Roman."

3. The common carp lives up to 25 years in the wild,
and up to 40 years in captivity. The durable fish can survive in waters up to 90 degrees F, and can even withstand freezing for short periods.

6. You can create a fanctypants object in javascript like so:
Edited on Wed Feb-20-08 05:03 PM by mainegreen
object=function() {
private=true;
return {
public:true,
method:function(){}
}
} ();

But the last (); is highly ugly looking.
Makes people cringe.

I mean come ON! function(){} ();????

MADNESS!

:P

11. The internal combustion engine performs four distinct operations: ...
-intake, where fuel and air is added to the firing cylinder on the downstroke;

-compression, valves seal the cylinder and the air and fuel vapor are squeezed by the up-stroke;

-ignition, the spark plug detonates the mixture and the expoding gas forces the piston back down;

-exhaust, the exhaust value opens and the upstroke expells the burnt vapor.

14. My sister still has it.
It had been abandoned for about a year, but when she moved back into town, it was still available, so the family still has a number we've had since 1958.
