2. Cool!
The song clips I've seen (before yours) have that quaint 80s f/x style, some awesome choreography, and the music almost reeks of optimism. Definitely 1980.

Plus, Olivia and Gene Kelly. Who'd have thunk? They're a class act together too. Which makes the movie an even more interesting grab bag of genres lumped into one big tent...

I'll be buying it tomorrow... I know the soundtrack was a HUGE seller; the movie not so much... but yesterday's optimism surely can't come amiss in ANY decade...

The weird part is, I'm not often for musicals and I can't stand any attempt to watch "Grease"... (Travolta looks... icky. Ewww.)

Thx for posting that clip link!

9. Super Cool!!!
I like the movie, cheesy as it is --okay, it was on cable when I was younger and stuck bored at my Dad's house in Ohio during the summer so me and my younger sister watched it over and over. We both know just about all the words/songs/lyrics...

4. Well
"I am still relevant!"

"I want to do one more movie before I die!"

"I want to hold Olivia Newton-John!"

"I want to smoke crack!"

Does it matter? That youtube clip shows the movie has at least 4 minutes' worth of class in what's otherwise a kitschy movie with one hell of a soundtrack... :D

8. Definitely an awesome soundtrack... timeless. Absolutely timeless.
And considering it was 1980, not an easy task. :D

I shouldn't jest. Not all from that era was crap...

10. Best part of the movie
All them disco-fied ELO tunes and Jeff Lynne production all over the place.

The movie, OTOH :puke:

22. I second that.
The song and dance numbers rocked, but the actual movie part sucked balls. Bad acting, an even worse plot, and Gene Kelly wondering "what the hell am I doing here with these amateurs?"

My recommendation? Get the DVD, or order it through Netflix, and keep your thumb on the "skip to next scene" button. That will get you the truly fabulous musical parts without having to sacrifice too many IQ points watching the crappy movie.

6. Oh shit yeah
Saw it opening night at the movies in 1980--a friend of mine won two tickets. Still have the soundtrack (vinyl!) and I watch it on TV whenever I come across it. Snagged it on the TiVo several months ago but haven't given it a looksee yet. It's saved though.

7. I bought the Xanadu soundtrack just for the song by The Tubes...
Sadly, when I went to type in the subject, I got as far as "I bought" and Firefox filled in the rest, so I guess I've admitted this once before.

23. Bought a copy on LD while VERY high once.
Anyone like it? Don't know if it still plays, it's the old "Discovision" release, appropriately enough.

I will say that any film with Gene Kelly in it is worth seeing once at the very least. Michael Beck on the other hand, couldn't act his way out of a wet paper sack constructed of Kleenex. THIS abortion:

ALWAYS tops my "Worst Movies of the Modern Era" list. Not even in the "so bad it's good" category. My friend Al and I made the mistake of going to see this film while VERY HIGH. Led by us, the entire audience turned it into a live "Mystery Science Theater 2000" event, all of us trying to top the other guy in bad comments about the mess on the screen.

24. I'm fairly certain that there is a special government list about people who have watched Xanadu
and discuss it on message boards.

You probably already know this.

25. Yes
Somebody gave the soundtrack to me. The album had a little crack on it ,but I could level it out and still listen to it. I liked Olivia Newton-John alot and still enjoy some of her music today.

27. 3 great things about it (at least)...
...Gene, ELO and the Pan-Pacific Auditorium, the Art Deco building featured in some scenes, which I watched burn to the ground in L.A. in the '80s.

It's otherwise a whacked-out, campy flick with various pleasures because of that. But in this regard, it can't hold a candle to "Can't Stop the Music."

Gene Kelley is from Pittsburgh, by the way.
