Hiking Fremont Peak in the Gavilans yesterday (pics)
We took advantage of the (brief) break in the big Pacific storm yesterday to hike to the top of Fremont Peak in the Gavilans range, just east of Monterey. Elevation just shy of 3200 feet.

The peak.

Looking down into Salinas valley.

Another view approaching the peak.

Looking across the ridgeline of the Gavilans north of the peak.

Looking east--that strange run of cliffs in the center of the pic is part of the San Andreas fault.

Windblown, cold and happy at the top.

1. I can see Fremont Peak from my house
It's right over there *points* — the one with all the teevee transmitters on it. :hi:

3. Heh...it was a challenge getting those pics WITHOUT the towers showing.
Even though it was cold and gray yesterday, it was a gorgeous place to hike. :hi:

6. Did you go in the small cave at the top?
It's kind of cool. There was snow up there last week I think.

11. I had no idea there was a cave up there!
Is it close to one of the trails? I'd love to check that out next time we hike over there.

17. I thought it was right underneath the peak but I don't remember exactly
It was not much of a cave, more like a small room, but it was still pretty cool.

12. Happy back to school day to you!
The pic's kind of ridiculously close-up, but that was the best we could do with camera at arm's length. :7

15. I'm not sure, but I'm guessing Oedi would know (since he lives nearby).
I vaguely recall seeing signs for Mt. Madonna, though...

Looks like fun. Were the trails slippery?
