How I finally got the cat to use the litter box

To make a long story short, in October the cat abruptly changed his generally good litter box habits. His health was not an issue, he was angry with us for going on vacation, and having my mother come over to take care of him for a week.

He's a 15 year old cat. I tried leaving him in the bathroom overnight (with food, water, and snuggly bed, of course), but it seemed every time he got out he'd go where it was simply unacceptable.

On Monday, exasperated, I looked Tails square in the eye, and told him I was going to get a new kitty...one who would use the litter box; and that I was going to donate him to Purple Fart.

By god, the next day there was poo in that litter box. And after his breakfast he used it again. I used a little positive reinforcement, and gave him some catnip, which he no doubt expects to receive every time he uses the box now. But I don't care.
I'm just so glad Tails is being a good kitty again. :-)
