Tom Petty chosen for Super Bowl halftime show, cannot sing about "rolling another joint"
I transcribed this from the new issue of Rolling Stone, which arrived today, so there's no link.

"Petty to Rock Super Bowl"

"I was shocked when they called me," Tom Petty says about his February 3rd gig with the Heartbreakers - playing the halftime show at Super Bowl XLII in Glendale, Arizona. "But I looked at the shows that McCartney, the Stones and Prince played, and said 'This looks like it could be pretty cool.'"

The only request the NFL made is that Petty refrain from playing "You Don't Know How It Feels," which contains the lyric "Let's roll another joint."

2. "Let's roll another joint" will be replaced by:
"Let's inject some more 'roids"

3. Um, the Super Bowl involves football teams, not baseball
There's no steroid usage in football.

5. Oh well, he can always play "Mary Jane's Last Dance"
Last dance for Mary Jane,
One more time to kill the pain...

7. What if he turns that line into a product plug. Something like, "Jimmy Dean sausage makes me oink"

8. Remember the Stones and "Let's Spend The Night Together"...
...in order to play the song on the Ed Sullivan show, they had to change the lyrics to "Let's Spend Some Time Together."

My favorite all-time rock star "live" moment was a John Mellencamp live broadcast following the release of his album "Big Daddy" in 1989. Somewhere in my stash of old cassette tapes I have this show as it was simulcast all over the U.S.

In the song "Pop Singer," he changed the lyrics from:

"Never wanted to be no pop singer,
Never wanted to write no pop songs."

TO:

"Never wanted to be no pop singer,
Never wanted to write no stupid fuckin' pop songs."

Swear on my life. It was a magic moment which I'm sure caused more than a few corporate heart palpitations.

:toast:
