The BlueIris Semi-Nightly Poetry Thread, 12/7/07 Bonus
Edited on Fri Dec-07-07 09:10 PM by BlueIris
"For the young who want to"

Talent is what they say
you have after the novel is
published and favorably
reviewed. Beforehard what
you have is a tedious
delusion, a hobby like knitting.

Work is what you have done
after the play is produced
and the audience claps.
Before that friends keep asking
when you are planning to go
out and get a job.

Genius is what they know you
had after the third volume of
remarkable poems. Earlier
they accuse you of withdrawing,
ask why you don't have a baby,
call you a bum.

The reason people want M.F.A.'s
take workshops with fancy names
when all you can really
learn is a few techniques,
typing instructions, and some-
one else's mannerisms,

is that every artist lacks
is a license to hang on the wall
like your optician, your vet
proving you may be a clumsy sadist
whose fillings fall into the stew,
but you're certified a dentist.

The real writer is one
who really writes. Talent
is an invention, like a phlogiston
after the fact of fire.
Work is its own cure. You have to
like it more than being loved.

1. My dear BlueIris!
Oh GOD yes!

I sure can identify with this one...

Everyone in my family says...oh, poetry? Uhhh...how nice!

It doesn't stop me, though...

And you do have to like it more than being loved...oh yeah.

Thank you!

3. I've heard writing called "The All-Night Disease"
because it keeps you up all night. :P

It definitely seems true that writers are only respected after their writing is respected. Though, that's true for all artist.

Ahem. Nope, no one here is bitter as hell.

They really are jealous, because they'll never create the things that you will. :)

9. kick
with, of course, my own words.

It's a quiet morning
without anticipation
a cold day ahead

It's a quiet morning
no anticipated annhialation
on toasted bread

Where were you
when I had my eyes
open
where were you
when I knew I had to
have you
where did you go in the mist from the morning
I have no ideas
what you do when you do
what you do

It's a quiet morning
There's no anticipation
cold days ahead
you used to say
have you
ideas
somewhere to go

Where did you go from the mist in the morning
you had so many ideas
you used to say
have you
somewhere to go
On a quiet morning
