1. Full edition is
that much. Photoshop Elements can be had for about69 bucks. I have used both and unless you are a graphic artist save your money and buy Ulead Photo Impact 8.0. This program will do what ever you want to do and can be bought online for about 70 bucks. It is loaded with features, check it out.

3. Alternatives
Photoshop Elements does most of what photoshop does for under $100. Also, Paint Shop Pro by Jasc is about equal to Photoshop and is under $100

11. Which came first the chicken or the egg?
I think the high cost of software causes piracy. I don't think piracy is responsible for the high cost of software.

38. PSP has 95% of Photoshop's functionality at 10% of the price
And it loads and runs ten times faster than Photoshop. There is nothing more annoying than sitting with your arms folded watching the Photoshop start-up screen.

But you're right, though. Paint Shop Pro and Photoshop are not the same, and thank God for that. It's Paint Shop Pro for me.

21. Nope, you're looking at a relatively cheap Photoshop
Some places it's 800. It's very expensive. Those of you who say it's from illegal downloads, you are wrong. It is because the prices were jacked up so high on photoshop because it's an industry standard and as a graphic artist/photographer you are REQUIRED to have/use it for most projects. Since Adobe knew everyone used it... up went the price and profits. People who are struggling as artists choose to illegally download it because it's the only way they're going to be able to profit from their artwork.

28. Agreed.
Adobe products have always been usuriously high, even in the dark ages before Napster and Kazaa.

I guess it's a seller's market.

when you buy a scanner, printer, etc. My $200 Epson scanner came with a free PS Elements which I didn't even rrealize 'till I opened the box.

31. Anyone know about the academic version of PS?
While I am taking advantage of my online education, figure I'd buy software. Last year I got Finale music notation software academic version and it works for me...but I really want to get Photoshop before I gradumate next year...the academic version of course!

Was wondering for those of you with the academic version of Photoshop, is it all that, or should I hop on down to Costco and just get Elements?

Photoshop there is about 10% of retail. no packaging, no manuals, none of the other niceties, though.

35. I have a grant from Adobe
They are sending me free Photoshop, Illustrator, Premeire, GoLive, InDesign, PageMaker, Elements and a few others for both platforms. I have been getting all of the upgrades too. What more is there to life. When upgrade season arrives it is a PIA, but worth it.

To answer the question. I am the technology director of a small school district, and working with a few people we managed to get this through. It took about a year and a half. I will tell you it has helped my software budget more than anything else.

36. Not PhotoShop, - but it's free and it's small (5meg)
.
.

I have and use PhotoShop 5.5 as well as this program ImageForge

I am impressed with what ImageForge can do, it even has some features that PhotoShop does not, so I use them both.

ImageForge has a MUCH better preview system for looking at your pix before you open them,

For link, and info, clik on screenshot
