School cancels play that had racist slur as original title

Associated Press - November 27, 2007 1:05 AM ET

WEST CHESTER, Ohio (AP) - A widely performed school play has been canceled by officials at a suburban Cincinnati high school after complaints from a local NAACP official.

Agatha Christie's "Ten Little Indians" was to be performed by students at Lakota East High School this weekend.

The play is based on Christie's 1939 mystery novel.

But local NAACP president Gary Hines says the play is inappropriate for a school production because the original title for Christie's novel used a racial slur.

1. "Indians" is a slur?
Granted, it is geographically inaccurate, but Jesus Christ, it is a classic of English-language literature.

4. Holy shit!
Is that the original title, or special printing for America and South Africa?

8. Please refer to earlier "holy shit" remark.
That it pretty blunt even for the 1930s. What's the deal with the little racist drawings? Wow.

9. Actually, that was no big deal for the 1930s.
40s... 50s... 60s...

I'll refer you to the Jim Crow Museum.

11. To clarify however...
that reprehensible title was used only in the UK, not in the US. Which makes the cancellation even dumber.

12. I don't think the "N" word was thought to be as vile as it was in the USA...
...because that island did not have a history of race-based slavery, though they benefitted from it elsewhere in the empire. There was no civil war over slavery and no brutal repression campaign after emancipation.

Again, I'm not trying to make excuses for it, but the attitudes were somewhat different over there.

7. That's fucking stupid
There's respectfulness, and there's political correctness, and then there's just...stupidity.

13. I recommend that they instead do an exploration of the classic nursery rhyme
Edited on Tue Nov-27-07 02:54 PM by Peake
"Rub a dub dub, three men in a tub". Everyone likes nursery rhymes, you read them to your children. This one is highly musical, and could feature songs from Mad Professor and the Dub Maniacs as well as various Reggae numbers.

And no one could possibly be offended by three male buddies who bathe together as a water-saving initiative.
