my mom told me about a show she watched about the suburbs
and how people who grow up in suburbia don't acculturate the same way as city folk.

i think it explains how all these jagoffs are always fingerfucking ipods while walking down the street ("HEADS UP GUY!!!!") or walking on my side of the sidewalk (they must not know that you walk to the right hand side and not walk four abreast on the sidewalk).

i guess in suburban culture where there is no pedestrian scale, simple unwritten rules i take for granted must completely escape these children of suburban detroit, ohio, indiana, and all other points of the midwest.

as an aside, the holiday was wonderful: if i had a car, i could have parked it and all the major thoroughfares were clear.

it's like 65% of the north side went home for at least thursday.

christmas is the same way.

1. I always loved NYC at Thanksgiving - the city was practically empty
I imagine Chicago the same way.

And yes, people who grow up in suburbia, unless they take the effort to change, grow up uncultuered, unacculturated, and a gigantic pain in the ass of people who are aware that things exist outside our bodies.

2. wednesday night was the best
went to the hipster karaoke place. it's usually packed, but there were only about 20 people and it was a good crowd. no endless seas of carefully tousled hair and backwards ball caps.

god, i wish detroit, cleveland, cincinatti, or dubuque would rebound so they could all go there.

3. Either their parents never taught them or they just don't care.
I suspect for many it's the latter. It's a complaint DH and I have had for a long time, especially after moving to a very small town.

I guess I've always thought of those unwritten rules not just as common courtesy but as common sense.
