FYI, a few weeks ago I stepped up and paddled my first Minnesota North Shore creek--kind of a mild one, a few miles of class III with one meaty class IV drop. Heres the lesson I learned: when your friend tells you you could take either a creek boat or your playboat, go with the creeker!

I took my beatdown like a man and rolled up in the curtain a couple of times, but in the end, I had to swim for it. :hi:

2. There's no shame in that.

The last time I swam was on a piddly class II rapid about 10 years ago. I was just hanging out sidesurfing a small hole, caught the upstream edge, and got dunked. For some reason, I became totally disoriented, couldn't figure out where my paddle was, and ended up bailing out.
