Name a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame performer / band that you feel actually deserves that honor.
It seems like each passing year results in a weaker list of inductees, and the marketing line about "stretching the boundaries" to include performers who have nothing to do with rock & roll strikes me as being somewhat pathetic.

That said, let's build a DU R&R Hall of Fame from the creme de la creme.

Here's the list of inductees, from the R&RHoF Web Site: http://www.rockhall.com/inductees/inductee-list/

I'll start it off with someone who absolutely belongs...someone who's charted his own territory for over four decades and, as the saying goes, has "often been imitated but never equaled"...Neil Young, inducted in 1995.

3. Black Sabbath and The Who.
Edited on Sun Nov-18-07 06:57 AM by HughBeaumont
Not the only ones, obviously, but those two bands were mainly responsible for vaulting heavy music into fruition and the catalysts for several genres that still thrive to this day.

Now it seems like their inductees smack of any excuse to give the finger to progressive rock, like AOR/MOR toss like Bonnie Raitt and Jackson Browne (?) or one-joke wonders The Sex Pistols, whose replacement bassisst couldn't even freaking PLAY the damned thing. Now I hear that disco acts such as Chic and Donna Summer (hey, I like "I Feel Love" as much as the next 70s-worshipping music snob, but rock she ain't) are on the next ballot. Overrated bands such as The White Stripes will probably get in before a Yes, ELP or Genesis does.

5. My Incomplete Assesment
First Ballot, Unanimous, No-Brainers, the Babe Ruths and Jackie Robinsons:

Elvis Presley (invented the notion of the Rock Star)
Beatles
Rolling Stones
Kinks
Bob Dylan
Prince
The Clash
Queen
Bruce Springsteen
U2
Velvet Underground
Pink Floyd
Sex Pistols
Led Zeppelin
Eric Clapton
Beach Boys
Stevie Wonder
Neil Young
David Bowie
The Doors
Blondie (the last true New Wave band left standing)
AC/DC (I'm not a big fan, but their influence is undeniable)
Grandmaster Flash
REM (even though recent stuff is subpar, the early albums are genius, and they are an iconic act)

Second Tier:

Van Halen (we forget how hard it is to be lowd and rowdy while crafting good songs)
The Animals
Aerosmith
Ramones

Early trailblazers, the Walter Johnsons and Cy Youngs:
Buddy Holly
Little Richard
Jerry Lee Lewis
Sam Cooke
Chuck Berry
Fats Domino
James Brown
Smokey Robinson

Acts that don't belong:

Joni Mitchell (not really rock, not really good)
Fleetwood Mac (a decent pop band, but not much more)
The Eagles (Flying Burrito Brothers, Buffalo Springfield, Stone Ponys all did it earlier and better)
Billy Joel (come on)
Paul McCartney ("Say, Say, Say" violates the Geneva Convention)
Steely Dan (because I hate pretentious, all-chops-no-songwriting twaddle)
Bob Seger (a passable bar band singer. Springsteen took it to a new level, Seger didn't)

Should be in, but aren't:

Steve Earle (I don't think he's eligible untill next year)
Siouxsie and the Banshees
Echo & the Bunnymen
X
Henry Rollins/Rollins Band/Black Flag
The Cure
English Beat
Billy Bragg (not eligible yet)

20. Velvet Underground??
Sure, the 25 or so Soho hipsters who actually bought their cacophonic, craptastic albums might agree with you, but lets face it.. if Lou Reed had never written about Holly giving head, nobody outside of his apartment building would even know his name.

28. Yes, but the influence lingers...
...the Velvets gained as much notoriety from the Warhol connection as they did the music, and they also were the anti-"Summer of Love" band. I tapped immediately into the whole Airplane/Dead "San Francisco Sound" thing, but Lou & Sterling & Maureen & John sat in their shitty little NYC dives with Andy and crew and crafted something a completely different.

I listen to their music today and in many cases think "so what," but the influence still resonates. There's a very fine line between Michael Stipe and the Velvets-era Lou Reed...and that's not the only connection that can be drawn.

30. There's really two Velvet Undergrounds
The first two records and the third and fourth really sound like different bands in some ways.

My favorite is the sonic power and weirdness of the first two, as I'm an unapologetic John Cale partisan, but there's no denying the beauty of the later songs, especially the 3rd album.

they TOTALLY deserve to be there.

31. Meh.. I still think VU was the equivalent of The Strokes..
marginally talented at best, with a small handful of famous friends, and the local NY press in their pockets, who still couldn't manage to parlay any of these perks into record sales outside of a very few contrarian types who reflexively deem anything popular as shit, and anything outside of the mainstream as good.

34. Feh on you!
Listen to the banana album. Then remember that it was recorded in 1967. There was nothing, NOTHING, else like that at the time.

Without the Velvet Underground, no REM. No Echo & the Bunnymen. Hell, none of the postpunk and alternative acts of the 1980s and 1990s. In some ways, VU had as much influence on rock history as the Beatles and the Stones.

62. Steely Dan deserves to be in there but where is Rush on your list?
Neal Peart is considered one of the best drummers EVER (rivalling John Bonham).

I also think that King Crimson should be on that list. Perhaps they weren't as mainstream as the other bands but they had a major influence over many of the top musicians of today (okay - musicians who can actually play music - not the manufactered music).

I think Yes and Moody Blues should be in there - but that's just my love of all things prog rock talking

19. The big 3...Yes, King Crimson, Genesis
Although I wrote Genesis off after Steve Hackett's departure. I saw the "Wind & Wuthering" tour at Winterland in San Francisco...essentially the same concert that is documented on their double live album "Seconds Out." I encourage people to not think of Phil Collins as the pop hack who spewed out the wretched "Sussudio" but rather as one of the most amazing, jaw-dropping drummers on the planet. Hackett was...and still is...an amazing guitarist too.

When I moved to California, I fell into a crown that was heavily into prog. The three bands I've named were a major part of those years and as such I remember the music and the friendships that went along with it.

17. Absolutely. Such a shame they had a "beginning, middle and end"...
I look at performers who...despite the occasional ups and downs...could sustain a 10, 20, 30, 40 year career...

And then I look at The Beach Boys, who SHOULD have retired the band upon Carl Wilson's passing, yet the band to this day with Mike Love and Bruce Johnston and a bunch of guys no one knows.

But the real core of the band...from the beginning through "Holland," their last significant contribution...THAT was genius. The "Brian Is Back" stuff...largely a marketing slogan from Warner Brothers...has spotty results, but "Holland" would have made a wonderful swan song.

23. I totally agree
The band took a hit when Brian left the band, when Denny died another hit, but when Carl passed away the band was just a shadow of itself, the band should have retired, because there are no Wilson brothers left in the band, and without Carl's voice and his presence it just would never be the same IMHO.

The Mike and Bruce show, it's not the true BB's, just a traveling jukebox show. Mike can say that he wrote the lyrics and he was the frontman, but it was Brian's brain and the 3 Wilson bros' vocals that put the real magic in the music. I liked their earlier cars/school/beach music, but after pet sounds it took a whole different path, and I love that era the most. Sunflower and Holland are awesome. I have favorites on all the albums, even on MIU and LA lol

42. Knebworth 1980 CD + DVD...final UK performance of all 3 Wilson brothers on stage
This one's available as a CD, a DVD, or a CD/DVD combo (that's the one I own). Taking age and other issues into consideration, it is the "real" Beach Boys and it's all 3 Wilson brothers for one final time. Since you mention MIU and LA, I know you're familiar with the "Brian Is Back" era and the fact that on stage, he was far from "back." You probably already own this, but if you don't, I'm sure you would enjoy it.

:toast:

The Amazon review:

It's entertaining, nostalgic, even poignant... not much more one could ask for from a Beach Boys concert. This 70-minute concert was the last time the complete group (brothers Brian, Carl and Dennis Wilson, Al Jardine, Mike Love, and Bruce Johnston, plus backing musicians) would appear in the U.K., performing a mix of oldies ("California Girls," "Help Me Rhonda," "Fun, Fun, Fun," etc.) and some newer material. And if the show itself is somewhat pedestrian, it's still marvelous to see the three Wilsons together onstage, especially in view of the subsequent deaths of Dennis (in '83) and Carl (in '98), and Brian's eventual triumphant recovery from mental and emotional problems. To hear Carl sing so beautifully on "God Only Knows," or Dennis play drums with such power and emotion, or Brian, vacant but game, contribute a few lines to "Surfer Girl"... well, it might just bring a tear to your eye.

...June 1991, the Hornsby / Welnick years, not exactly the band's peak, but still worthwhile.

I was never a "Dead Head"...never saw a single show...but I own every "official" Warners / Arista release, all of the archive discs and box sets, and about 2/3 of the "Dick's Picks."

I'm a guitar player, and no matter what people might think of the Dead, Jerry MUST be given his props. Just like Hendrix or any other guitarist of note, he found a sound that was his and his alone.

I saw Jerry and Dave Grisman many times in the nineties....The albums they made together are really good as well as the film. (check out the Pizza Tapes) Joe Craven, who played with Jerry and Dave and is in the film is a kind of freind of mine. Joe is an incredible musician in his own right, playing every kind of instrument possible, and uses inanimate object for percussion as well as many parts of his body.

And it was not pleasant to be a part of that comedy number onstage - perhaps backstage it was very amusing!

(And yes, I did - thanks! ) :hi:

39. Buddy Guy, Robert Johnson, John Lee Hooker
Where do you all think Rock and Roll came from? The above three are just a few examples of greatness who must be honored.

56. From the blues department I would add
Charlie Patton, Blind Boy Fuller, Blind Willie Johnson,Skip James, Blind Blake, The Mississippi Sheiks, Reverend Gary Davis, Jimmy Reed, Bessie Smith, Mance Lipscom.

There are others, but the list is too long to recount here.

70. Agreed on all counts...
...I saw Buddy live a few years ago as part of a package tour with The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Dr. John, & BB King. Right after "Ladies and Gentlemen, BUDDY GUY" came through the PA system, Buddy ripped into the opening notes of "Sweet Home Chicago." He also did a bit on Clapton, saying "Did you ever wonder where he learned his stuff?" He noodled around for a bit, teasing the audience, and then performed a note-perfect, nuance-perfect version of Cream's "Strange Brew."

Robert's a "given"...the whole backstory of selling his soul at the crossroads to get his licks IS rock & roll.

John Lee? God, don't get me started on John Lee. There's a moment on the collaboration with Canned Heat ("Hooker & Heat") where Al Wilson is playing a harmonica solo and Hooker yells "Alan! ALAN! Blow your HORN, BABY!" Makes the hair on the back of the neck, arms, and elsewhere stand at attention. Or his later-career duet with Ry Cooder on "This Is Hip"...Ry whipping off that "Sister Morphine" slide guitar, Hooker offering a slow, measured vocal:

Will you come to my house and you dance with me
You hold me tight and you kiss me too
This is hip pretty baby
This is hip pretty baby
This is hip pretty baby
You gonna kiss me baby
I messed around and fell in love, ooh yeah

THAT'S rock & roll.

And anyone wanting to spend more quality time "Back In The Alley" needs a dose of Howlin' Wolf, specifically "Goin' Down Slow"...

Please write my mama
Tell her the shape I'm in
Please write my mama
Tell her the shape I'm in
Tell her pray for me
Forgive me for my sins

Now, the average person would read those lyrics and think "So WHAT?" But anyone who's actually heard Wolf SING them can point back to a moment in which their life was changed FOREVER.

As long as we're on this, there's Muddy...The legendary "Fathers & Sons" set with Michael Bloomfield on guitar, and the stand-out track "Long Distance Call," where the band goes silent and Muddy bellows "MUDDY WATERS...another mule's...been kicking in your stall," the band comes back in, crashing finale, what else can be said?

Or Freddie King, having already enjoyed a career built largely on instrumentals like "Hideaway" and "The Stumble," signing up with Shelter Records and Leon Russell to crank out a sting of roadhouse wonders like "Getting Ready" and "Texas Cannonball"...

So yes, it's where rock & roll came from, and on occasion, some performers take it back to its roots.

40. Here's a tentative list of acts which I think DON'T belong
Edited on Sun Nov-18-07 08:12 PM by brentspeak
These acts are/were outstanding, and many made some truly classic music. I've got albums by most of these artists. But they either a) just fall short of the "immortals" like the Beatles, Chuck Berry, James Brown, Led Zeppelin; or b) they weren't rock n' roll performers:

Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five
Patti Smith
The Ronettes
Van Halen
Black Sabbath
Blondie
Miles Davis (as a rock performer???)
The Sex Pistols
Buddy Guy
Percy Sledge
AC/DC
The O'Jays
The Pretenders
The Dells
Traffic
ZZ Top
Brenda Lee
Gene Pitney
Isaac Hayes
Queen
Solomon Burke
The Flamingos
Bonnie Raitt
Earth Wind & Fire
Eric Clapton (as a solo performer)
James Taylor
The Moonglows
Billy Joel
Curtis Mayfield
Del Shannon
Dusty Springfield
The Staple Singers
Lloyd Price
Santana
The Eagles
The Jackson Five
Gladys Knight and the Pips
Little Willie John (not rock n' roll)
Etta James (not rock n' roll)
Ruth Brown (not rock n' roll)
LaVern Baker (not rock n' roll)
John Lee Hooker (not rock n' roll)
Jimmy Reed (not rock n' roll)
The Impressions
The Platters (not rock n' roll)
Muddy Waters, BB King, Big Joe Turner (again, not rock n' roll)

78. I saw Robert Fripp on Peter Gabriel's first solo tour
He sat on his stool, as he does at the K.C. gigs. Gabriel introduced him as "An obscure country & western guitar player, Dusty Rhodes."

There is a version of "Here Comes The Flood" on Fripp's first solo album "Exposure." During the "I took the old track, the hollow shoulder across the water" lyrics, Fripp lets loose with a Fripp-ian, sustained, serpentine note that spirals and spirals and spirals and then vanishes in thin air.

He played that note that night.

A guy behind me bellowed "FRIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIP!"

Fripp indeed. One note, one musician, rock & roll.

84. I just saw him a few weeks ago with his League of Crafty Guitarists
Fripp comes out in this buddha like outfit, bows to the audience and then sits down on a chair hidden behind some speakers. So if you're there to watch Robert Fripp - that ain't happening. Then 10 guitarists come out and play some of the most amazing music. Fripp rarely plays although from time to time will chime in with his electric guitar (the others are all acoustic).

On the 3rd encore - all the guitarists, Fripp include, disconnect their guitars from the wires and stand up at the front of the stage - Fripp included. For the last songs, after a few bars, Fripp stops them because something wasn't right and makes them start over again.

Only Fripp could do something like that

71. Toy Caldwell and that magic thumb...
...Doug Gray is keeping the MTB name alive today with all-new players, but the original band? I remember an ABC TV program called "In Concert." One episode had the MTB, Wet Willie and The Allman Brothers. In the days when MTV's creators were still in diapers, you could turn on the TV and see this kind of thing for free.

My personal favorite, other than the obvious ("Can't You See," "Take The Highway") is the live version of "24 Hours At A Time" from "Where We All Belong."

The band's current label, Shout Factory, also put together two amazing concert albums, "Stompin' Room Only: Greatest Hits Live 1974-1976" and the 2-CD "Live On Long Island 04-18-80" the final performance of the original band (bassist Tommy Caldwell died ten days later after an auto accident).
