New York Times, lay off Portland, Oregon
Edited on Mon Nov-05-07 11:49 PM by swag
NYT articles mentioning Portland, Oregon, sorted by date.

Pick on Philadelphia, Baltimore, Chapel Hill, Athens, New Orleans, Pensacola, Austin, Tucson, Madison, Minneapolis, Boulder, Lincoln. Leave this town the fuck alone for a change. You're on us every fucking day in every fucking section of your goddamned paper!

Your constant fawning is completely over the top. The resulting influx is getting to be a bit more than a bit much. The Mash Tun on Alberta is now a tourist destination where loud mouthed assholes reset the jukebox repeatedly until it plays that Fugazi shit they want to cellphone back to Brooklyn to fry a premature patina onto their own hipster dipshit credentials. They even eat the avocado on their BLATO sandwiches.

The fucking Shins live around the corner, Scout Niblett blasts down the street in her car wearing her helmet, Todd Haynes is mildewing out there in my back yard, him and 30 Dylans. Those LA bitches next door never shut up and throw parties until all hours. Their dogs and boyfriends bark incessantly.

New York Times, you are turning Portland into the next fucked out, fried out has-been was-a-place. There is a massive Gap going in on Mississippi Ave., that's what I hear, and I blame you, New York Times.

New York Times, discover El Paso, Sheboygan, Pensacola, Fairbanks. Give Portland, Oregon a fucking break.

1. Amen! Shout it out loud my mysanthropic brother!
Hard to say, but I think we may be beyond the point of no return. I do enjoy calls from my friends in other cities these days, though, especially those from Seattle.

I long for the days when we were famous for Tonya Harding, Bob Packwood, the Bogwan Rajneesh, and Monica Lewinsky! It's all gone to hell since Les Schwab died and Tom Peterson gave up his empire to that harlot Gloria!

18. Secret Society Ballroom & Recording Studio
Same building as Toro Bravo, right next door to Wonder - it's the old Disjecta building. PM me if you ever want to come check out the studio. I know you dig that sort of thing. We sent cables from the studio to the ballroom - now we can get those huge Bonham drum sounds. Pretty damn cool. I'm still jonesing to do a choir of some sort, and hopefully some strings at some point too.

Don't get me wrong. I love this fucking place, and couldn't dream of being anywhere else. I've tried to leave three times, and quickly returned to the womb each time. Where else could someone like me pull it together to renovate a 1907 lodge hall without major corporate backing? You can still live the dream here - I'm proof of that (so far).

We need to get together and go blow up the malls.

There's a bit of rebellion going on here. It's boiling over. Last week someone spray-painted "NO MORE CONDOS" on the side of some built-on-the-cheap, overpriced yuppie dwelling in Ballard. Persons involved deserve a medal. Developers have turned Ballard into a gentrified shithole.

28. Aw, are the sad tfbs crying because people found them?
As far as i can tell, the only thing that is better in stumptown now from 20 years ago is the food. The foodie scene is good, the music is about equal, and the people fucking suck. Oh, i will give you the expansion of MAX. You are doing the same whining that was done 15 years ago when 23rd street was edgy, before the Immediate Care Center, Escape, and all the others were chased off (what the hell is three monkeys, anyway? Seriously). You want good? Try a Portland without Starbucks, when coffee people was your only option. Hell, even music millenium is gone.

30. Music Millennium isn't completely gone, just from 23rd
I'll give you that 23rd sucks now. I spoke with Terry about the closure of that store, and there really was no reason for him to stay there. People who shop on that street no longer buy cds in a volume that justifies the rent. I also spoke with Phil from Escape From NY, and he seems completely committed to keeping that street real. His place has not changed in 20+ years. It's brilliant.

As far as people from Portland sucking, well you can kindly fuck right off. Just stay away if you don't like it. It may be suffering an invasion from other less hospitable places right now, but the people here are by and large the best collection of nutjobs I've ever enjoyed the company of.

I guess i wouldn't know anything about it. this is no different from tom mccall's don't californicate oregon campaign, sorry, but anyone who complains about outsiders coming in and ruining everything is, frankly, a xenophobic jerk. Most of those people that make portland weird aren't natives, either.

Edited on Tue Nov-06-07 10:36 PM by swag
Coffee People's grinds (Black Tiger, indeed. Could the Faces of Meth be far behind?) were far too caffeinated (and Stumptown Roasters' local ascent over Coffee People AND Starbucks is quite welcome).

Expansion of MAX is kind of awful, given the better, faster, and more frequent service on the bus lines, and the destruction of the downtown bus malls. Leave well enough the fuck alone.

As for your evaluations, do you get off of NW 23rd much?

I thought not.

For one thing, i like living in a place where minorities do things besides clean houses, or is there a black or hispanic middle class in portland these days? How many black people are on the city council these days?

and portland has been weird for decades, and issuing the same complaints about outsiders ruining it for just as long. Remember Bud Clark? Now that was weird. I left when i couldn't handle all the newbies complaining about the next wave of newbies ruining it for them.
