Recurring themes in dreams.

I keep having dreams about tornados. I've done a little reading about dreams, and it is thought by psychologists that dreams are symbolic about current aspects of your mind and waking reality. Working on that definition, it would seem that my tornado dreams are symbolic of violent, drastic changes in the reality of my life and my mind.

In my dreams I am not injured or killed by the tornados despite being caught right in the middle of them. It would seem that I am "weathering the storm" so to speak.

But in reality I cannot think of anything in my personal life that is causing tornado-like changes. Could the dreams be foreshadowing something to come? Or could the dreams be reflective of my current feelings about the world at large? There are definitiely violent, drastic changes occurring in the world right now.

None of that really fits. Things are actually going pretty good for me now. I just got a new position at work and a big raise. And then there is the idea that even though I'm right in the middle of the tornados, I come out of them without harm.

it might mean that you have some doubts (inside tornado) before you regain your confidence and emerge unharmed. I rarely remember my dreams and while I find dream interpretation somewhat interesting, I also take it with a grain of salt.

Dream symbols depend on the dreamer. It sounds like you already know what the dreams are about, but think about your personal associations with tornadoes.

One of the characteristics of tornadoes that people from tornado-prone areas tend to associate with them, that people outside those areas tend not to, is randomness. A tornado can destroy half your house and leave the clothes hanging on the hangers in the bedroom closet, while the rest of the bedroom is now in the neighbor's front yard. One can wreck your neighbor's house completely, and leave yours standing. They're capricious and chaotic, and they are also order coming out of chaos. They connect the sky with the earth. There's more to them than just violent, drastic change, so think about what all the things are that you think about tornadoes, and in that you should find your own key.

7. I've never seen a tornado in person

Although a few have hit within about 30 miles of where I live.

When I see tornadoes on TV the give me the feelings of fear and awe. Maybe I am fascinated by danger.

It could be that this is about the positive change in your life - the "winds of change", as it were. They are awesome and frightening, but they're not harming you: success, new jobs, all that is also frightening in its own way, as is any change. It may be a recognition that even the successes you've worked so hard for are also partly due to circumstances.

It could be that the feelings of fear and awe are in response to the apparently chaotic energy that resides in the subconscious mind of all of us, incredibly strong and focused to a point (a funnel cloud), and yet beyond our conscious control.

The subconscious holds an immense amount of knowledge, experiences, symbols, and collective archetypes. But, we don't have control of it. Many times it controls us.

8. Well for years I have had tornado dreams myself

Usually in them I am struggling to find shelter or in shelter pinned down unable to move as I watch the tornado move closer. It has been my experience that these dreams appear when there is some larger issue in my life that I am anxious about yet I know is totally out of my control (usually when something at work is going bezerk). Does that sound at all relevant?

10. Maybe a little

The only big thing that has happened to me recently is that I got a better position at work and a good raise. But everything is going alright as far as that goes. It's longer hours, but nothing is going "bezerk" and I don't feel out of control.

Time for a college final in a course that I had either forgotten i had enrolled in, or had cut for the entire semester. It usually is a math course. I have this dream 2 or 3 times a year. I was last in college 20 years ago.

20. I have several recurring themes: elevators, for one.

I get into an elevator and it goes crazy -- flying sideways, upsidedown, etc.

Another theme is I'm back in college and trying to get my mail out of my mailbox, but I can't remember the combination.

Another is that passenger trains have started running through my town again.

Another is that I'm on a plane, but it's HUGE, like a mall.

32. It does not look like anyone will admit to having the naked in public...

recurring dream. The odd thing of mine is that in the dream I'm horribly tense and scared about being naked, but no one seems to notice. Hmmmm.

33. I had the naked-in-public dream once.

I was driving an empty bus and I got out and realized I didn't have any clothes on. I was in the middle of a city and all the people stopped and stared at me. Then one of the people said, "That's it! I knew there was something I forgot to do this morning!" and took off their clothes. Then everyone else did, too. Then we were all naked, and one of them said to me, "Thanks for reminding us." "No problem," I said, got back on my bus, and drove away to look for a place where I could buy chocolate cake with green frosting. (The bakeries in the imaginary city only sold chocolate cake with white frosting.)

11. Alligators are my recurring theme

But they aren't really menacing or attacking me. I'll be swimming and they'll be in the water with me. I'll take good caution not to disturb them but I don't freak out or anything.

I also have the recurring tornado dream as well--I think this somehow is a common dream for many people. For me, I think it's just because I've never seen a tornado and there is something exciting about seeing it, as long as it is from a distance.

12. Cats symbolize my sanity at the time.

I swear. If I dream of starving, emaciated cats, I'm really not doing much for my own sanity. If I dream of healthy cats, it's a good period of my life.

Now all my recurring theme dreams are mundane things, all set in a post-apocalyptic setting. Sorta scary, that.

I used to dream about them a lot, and they always meant I was worried about a test or other stressful event "on the horizon."

23. I dreamt that I'd bought a Porsche 911 Turbo (fucking Guiliani ruining that name)

and was having a grand old time driving it around corners are break-neck speeds. Couldn't afford it to save my life, but oh well

24. I always dream that I've neglected/forgotten pets

Even pets from 30 years ago. I'll wake up with my heart racing because I've forgotten to feed my horse for, oh, I don't know, a few decades. Or I dream that my kitties get out in traffic or due to natural disasters and I can't find them.

29. Neglecting pets....

Another common anxiety dream of mine. I'll dream I realize I owned another cat or dog and I haven't fed them in months, and I feel very guilty.

28. For years now mine have been about buildings I can't get out of

I'm not harmed, but I'm in buildings I'm somewhat familiar with and there are people in my dreams I am somewhat familiar with. I am in different buildings and I can't find the exits. Somewhat troubling.
