Tsongas wins race to succeed Meehan in Congress

LOWELL, Mass. --The widow of 1992 presidential candidate Paul Tsongas defeated the brother of an American Airlines pilot slain in the Sept. 11 terror attacks Tuesday in the special election to replace Democrat Martin Meehan in the U.S. House.

1. Jeepers! How'd the repuke get to 46 percent?

Ogonowski won in Andover, Methuen, Tewksbury and his hometown of Dracut. But Tsongas' support in Lowell and Lawrence was enough to earn her the seat.

How are we going to increase our majority next year if the repukes are even competitive in Mass.? :shrug:

2. Low turnout

Ogonowski ran a decent race. He isn't a right-wing nutball, and came across as articulate, serious, and sane. Frankly, if the Democrats hadn't nominated a strong candidate like Niki, this might have gone GOP.

The 5th district is more Republican than other parts of the state. In recent statewide elections, Democrats have struggled in the western and Merrimack Valley suburbs. I'm a bit surprised that Tsongas lost Methuen, though.
