is anyone using the ratings system?

first two pages of GD right now, only three threads are rated at all. I've only rated 2-3 since the switch myself.

Do you rate?

topics that I think are really exceptional. I don't see the point in quashing someone's sense of self-esteem for posting something I've no interest in. And yet I do like the option of sharing how impressed I've been with some particularly thought-filled or just plain fun posts.


Edit: It occurs to me to add that apparently 1 vote for a rating doesn't do it. It takes a few before a rating is applied to the thread. Or so someone reported from the Comments forum last night.

8. No, not sure it's all that great an idea

Ratings are so subjective, yet the casual browser of threads won't know who's rating the thread, what their personal bias is, or what justification they based their rating on. Imho, it's better for DUers to read for themselves and reach their own conclusions about whether they like a thread or not.

well, I can rate threads that have already been rated, but cannot start a new rating. I think the admins have either turned off all new ratings, or are disenfranchising my vote

13. Ill-conceived me thinks

I live in awe and wonder of the work done by the administrators of this site (really), but this rating feature strikes me as ill-conceived. My guess is that far from providing valuable information, it will largely become a means for payback and pursuing feuds.

the number of replies and views tells me how good the thread is.

The explicit rating system isn't that useful, esp. since nobody is using it.

Good idea in theory, but the number of replies or who the poster is, is what I look at.

18. I've rated maybe a handful of threads. One was just to get to pi.

Aside from that one, they've all been fives. I don't see much point in rating a thread down. I only make the incredible effort to select a rating if I really think a thread is interesting or important or both.
