maybe she was flustered and that I'd do the same thing in front of a crowd and the lights. Then reality reared its ugly head and I remembered that this is something that she wanted, and has been training to do, for many years. So yeah, I have to agree, she's dumb.

18. She explained why she flubbed it, on CNN
She said she lost her train of thought.
Face it, her train of thought derailed at the station. :-)

22. In DC, this is called "issuing a clarification."
But yes, it looks as though she panicked and lost her train of thought. A high school senior is not normally less coherent than *.

2. I live in SC and have a 17 year old daughter
who goes to school in Virginia, took out some funds from the house and got her into a nice boarding school. People thought spending that much was crazy but hey..she can answer that damn question at least. I personally am not impressed with the school system here.

She's the red head in the front for this theatre company. She's doing fine and wants to move to NYC asap.

5. If she's as bright as the blurb says she is...
And she does sound rather intelligent, why did she fuck up the question so badly?
Near-terminal stage fright?

6. I've been so nervous in public speaking situations that I've had to excuse myself
to go barf. Once, after winning a high school economics competition, I fell off of the stage steps as I was going up to receive my award.

I'm not defending this kid because although she did sound pretty nervous, she also sounded pretty uninformed and ill-prepared, and it seems that about 90 percent of these pageants is preparation.

7. 'Her career goals include
earning a four-year Graphic Design degree. ... Ultimately Caitlin aspires to create special effects for television and movies. One of her dreams is to make it into the European modeling market which would offer her “once in a lifetime” experiences. ... Caitlin has discovered the joy of serving others."

So she wants to be a graphic-designing, community-serving European model. But what she really wants is to become a veterinarian, because she loves children.

due to her overarching concern for all those people who don't have access to maps.

13. This is true
I think I would've been happier, though.

I had a letter of application on file with the Goushá Co. when I was 11. I got back a very nice two-page letter from a vice president, and a few months later he sent me one of their giant U.S. road atlases. :D

14. *swoon*
I lovelovelove maps. When I first started driving, my dad gave me a beautiful US road atlas and my mom's attitude was, "Why does she need an atlas? She can always stop and ask someone for directions." :eyes:

16. I've loved 'em since I was about 9
I think I was 10 when I assumed navigation duties on our vacation trips. I still have all the maps I collected on said trips, and I've added quite a few since, including some historic ones via eBay. I can still spend hours studying 'em, trying to get a feel for the different areas.

I started drawing maps when I was 10 or 11, scaling and modeling them from Goushá road maps (I hated Rand McNally). That's what led me to study drafting from eighth grade through my first year of college.

Will give her some sort of boost.

This country is odd. They say you succeed with brains and hard work, but it's really luck or standing out by accident.

stop fucking up in life occasionally, will be the day we can criticize her.

Is she stupid? I don't know and I don't care.

But I don't think she needs to be spoken about poorly.

24. Aww, come on, she's a kid who choked on stage. I've done that.
Once in college I gave a book report that I've heard sounded about like that, before I froze completely and began sweating. I had worked out what I was going to say, but hadn't practiced the speech, and when I started speaking, I just couldn't say what I had planned. Instead of saying nothing, I talked for a minute, and to this day have no idea what came out. I shut up when I realized people were staring at their desks and shuffling their feet uncomfortably.

If you watch her, it's clear she's trying to balance three tasks at once. She's obviously been coached to show confidence and smile, no matter what she answers, and she's obviously also been told to try to work in something charitable, like helping people in Iraq and South Africa. Those are standard tactics. She just choked on her answer.

The media are classic, stereotypical bullies. They beat up on some kid with no chance to defend herself, so they can get a laugh and feel all superior. I hope they haven't damaged the poor kid.
