I have played the corp game for 10+ years, and finally put it to an end.
You can either play the game to win - and kick peoples' ass, or let it be and suffer through it all until something better comes along.
I was the best manager they had for data centers. Busted my ass for years, played the political game damned well.
But the wife got sick (she is the one in my sig line) and I put all of it behind me.
After years of being an employee who rated 'exceeded expectations' and being able to go to college and have it all paid for, etc, I got laid off - mainly due to the fact that I chose to work from home and care for my wife and daughter.
I talked to the guy I helped to take my old job (I felt he would best represent my engineers) this week. And they miss me, and his life is hell from all the calls and issues. He gets what I said for years, and is just coasting by - because no matter how hard he tries he knows that at any moment he might be deemed non-essential and kicked out.
Hard work CAN pay off, if you are willing to cave in to your beliefs. I put my family first, and paid the price - even though I dedicated years of my life to the 2nd largest bank in the country. 16 hour days, conference calls, etc - in the end it all meant jack.
What to do for you?
Make a choice. Play it to win, or don't play and just slide by and get the money and benefits.
