So what are the different cities in Australia like?
I have no idea what the personalities of the different cities there are like.

For most other countries I know which cities are more blue collar, which are more granola, and which are more hip and urban. But Oz? I know nothing.

Clue me in, please. :D

1. Well, my superficial knowledge is
that Sydney is cosmopolitan, international, hip

Melbourne a little less so (sort of a Second City?) ... Slightly more traditional than Sydney

Perth -- Sort of it's own little world (way off on the west coast -- one of the most isolated big cities on earth)

Canberra -- the capital ... Don't know much more than that

2. You might have to wait awhile to get a good answer...
Right now, its the middle of the night down under so I doubt there are too many of our DU friends with direct experience hanging out at the moment...:)

4. I know two Aussies, but neither came from big cities.
One actually had a blue retreiver that went with him everywherre. The other had never wore gloves before,he'd never really been cold. He said "You Canadians can actually tell the difference between -10,-20 amd -30 degrees,to me it's all cold."

6. Not just deadly snakes
but poisonous jellyfish and deadly stonefish..Yes, I know a couple of Aussies and it almost seems to be a point of honor to point out how many potentially lethal poisonous animals they have....:D

9. Been to some; heard about others
Sydney is very cosmopolitan. Some Aussies call it Little America. Melbourne is supposed to be more European. Canberra is supposed to be really dull - a government town. Brisbane is part of redneck land, but I didn't find it too bad. Though if you look in the city library, it's filled with musty old novels, nothing even recent. Darwin is known as Sin City. Cairns is a tourist pit. The Gold Coast is a mix of Miami, Tokyo and Disney Land. And Perth is supposed to be real nice. Yet Perth faces a dire water shortage. Tim Flannery says it could be the first ghost metropolis.
