Let's play Name That Kitten!
Edited on Tue Aug-14-07 05:19 PM by huskerlaw
I'm getting a kitten soon, and she needs a name.

What do you think, DU?

I should say that I prefer actual names over Blackie, Spot...or any other typical animal names.

Front-runners right now are Bella, Ridley and Bailey.

On edit: My other 2 cats are Riley and Spencer (both boys)

Her hair looks Sandy Gray and she looks like she's wearing a dancing outfit.

58. Ok, my list of some meaning-centered names
Edited on Tue Aug-14-07 07:41 PM by Godhumor
So I went with names having a meaning associated with things like dark, rain (she looks like a rain cloud), etc.

Kieran/Keiara (Celtic--Little Dark One)
Morrisa (American--Dark Skinned)
Lamya (Arabic--Dark Complexion)
Kerry (Celtic--Dark Princess)
Darcie (English--Of the Dark)
Farren (English--Iron Grey)
Aolani (Hawaiian--Cloud from Heaven. I like this one, and knew a few Aolanis from my time living on Oahu. The Ao is pronounced like the ow sound from owl)
Meghana (Sanskrit--Cloud)
Amaya (Japanese--Night Rain. My wife, who is Japanese, suggested this)
Kisha (Slavic--Rainfall)

65. Ow-lah-knee (3 syllables but pronounced together)
Ow isn't "exactly" right, but it is very close--you're trying to blend the a into the o.

I think Amaya is well suited--the darkish color on the back, the white cloudy belly, and the blue eyes for rain.

71. I'm probably no help
All my cats have been named after TV characters. Jessica was one of the ones who surprised me. I was already to name her MacGyver, but the first night at home, she wouldn't stop poking her head just about everywhere. So I ended up naming her Jessica after JB Fletcher, of course. But MacGyver became her last name along the way. I still miss her dearly.

Give the kitten a week. See what she likes to do, and her personality. I would say after a short while, you will have no trouble actually finding a name that "fits."

76. a different vowel sound so that the cats can differentiate
so you have long I and short E...

How about something with a long A or a long O like Ava or Mona?

77. She reminds me of Ella, my daughter's kitty.
Named after Ella Fitzgerald, of course.

Zelda would be cool too.

96. Edwina
Carol
June
Flo
Lenore

My family likes old fashion-y names for pets. My puppy is Agatha, old dog Lila, mom's dog is Samson, old dead dogs were Amos, Molly, and Andrea. Old cat names were Sidney, Masha, Higgins (named after Magnum PI's butler, he was a tuxie), Shadrach, Shadow, and Tigger.

Of course, that cat looks like she's wearing pants, so Rosie would be a perfect name!

97. After having named over 150 kittens in the past 27 years, I offer my methodology:
"Gray Kitty" which is short for "Gray and White Kitty"

102. NOT AT ONCE!!!! Yikes!!!!
NO, 150 at least after having lived on a farm for 27 years. We used to keep a family tree of all our cats, but after 8 generations we gave up. We started with real names, but it became so much easier to use descriptors such as "the crazy black kitten". We did have 2 good names for a couple cats, the vet and her staff complimented us: Chubby a momma cat and Braveheart one of her sons.
