6. Click on the little box with an "X" in it at the end of the thread title in

the list. It still takes you to the "hide thread" page, but you don't have to open the thread to hide it.

that warns one of "code words" of past flame wars so one doesn't innocently fall into flames around things like the Olive Garden, fried vs baked chicken, and Angolina Jolie (sp). Stumbling into a former flame wart that one never saw, and never was a part of - can be rather embarassing - esp if the aftermath is to ridicule another DUer (and I try to avoid ridiculing other DUers - esp if I don't know I am doing so.)

17. Well the reason I want it is

for days like yesterday in GD. There were so many Falwell threads on the first couple of pages, I had to go back to page 3 or 4 to find threads I was more interested in.

Like you, if I don't want to read them I don't. I don't even open them but they are still taking up space on the page. If I was able to hide them all with one click, then threads on page 4 would have been on page 1 for me.
