3. I did something really weird...
I put a salary range on Monster or one of those places saying that I'd work for minimum wage.

People started calling ME. It was a trip.

I must say, though, doors really opened up when I came across as an affordable hot commodity.

While you're waiting for work, this is a great time to do Harris Polls, Mystery Shopping, and start up a dog-walking service. It's also a great time to garden. That's what I did when I knew I was going to get laid-off. Threw myself into digging in dirt. It's cathartic.

I also did yard-sales on weekends. Hauled stuff to flea markets and sold it. If you can make back the money for the table, and the gas of the haul, you've got a profit.

Have you considered temp'ing?

14. Well, I have a job.
But I graduated from college in December, so I'm looking for my career job. Can't work retail my whole life. ;)

I'd consider temping, but I'd rather get something permanent.

4. I decided to call it "early retirement".
I'm gonna sell my house and move to the country. The taxes are killing me.

Nobody wants you if you're over 40.
Especially if you're skilled and educated.

This crap started in the 1990s.

15. Wouldn't I love to retire.
But since I'm only 27, I don't think that's an option. Yet.

I've heard stories like that, where it's hard to get (or keep) a job if you're over 40. I think that's ridiculous.

It might help if you aren't getting many responses.

16. A friend of my parents did my resume.
He's apparently a pro at it. I could get someone else to look at it for a second opinion though. Thanks for the idea.

7. I found a good headhunter.
And I let them get my resume in front of people. If your profession has its placement reps and recruiters then it might pay to find them. :)

19. A thought
but my ex had several bad experiences with head-hunters. I've been reluctant to go that route. How would one go about finding a good one?

29. The only way to find a good headhunter is to interview them.
Ask them for references and recent placement successes. :)

I hope you have some good ones in your area.

9. I hear CraigsList is a good resource
Edited on Tue May-15-07 12:05 AM by Montauk6
And there might be a section for your particular locality. http://www.craigslist.com

As far as waiting, it just takes loads of patience. If you don't have a gig going now, then obviously the desperation kicks in. But, hey, at some point, the replies do start trickling in.

And I've been checking out craigslist, and have applied for several jobs I found there.

26. We're going through the same thing here
The company Mr Gen works for is going under. He has been promised by his currant employer that he will have a job until they close the doors. We've posted on line and mailed out a pile of resumes. He had two interviews. One very promising. We're just keeping our fingers crossed

It's very stressful.

Good luck and positive vibes.
