Chinese boy climbs into crocodile pen, hits crocodiles with stick...outcome unsurprising.

Natural selection in action.

BEIJING, China (AP) -- A crocodile shot to death in south China during a search for a missing 9-year-old student was found to contain the child's remains, the official Xinhua News Agency said.

The crocodile was shot Saturday in a park in Beihai, a city in the Guangxi region, by investigators looking for the missing child. Investigators confirmed that human remains found in the reptile were that of the student, the report said.

The child, surnamed Liu, disappeared Friday after Liu and three other children climbed over the fence around a pool in the park that had been used to stage crocodile shows, Xinhua said.

"The children shot the animals with catapults and beat them with wooden sticks," the agency said. "One of the irritated crocodiles bit Liu's clothes and dragged him into water, where he was eaten by a swarm of crocodiles."

I'm surprised that the other three didn't get eaten. Must have run like hell once the first guy got scarfed.

For reference, this is a scale shot of a saltwater croc, the species I'm presuming was in the pen:

Not cute. Not cuddly. Something even a nine-year-old should know not to piss off.

1. Why Shoot The Crocodile?
Seems to me the croc did what was naturally expected of it. As for the kid, he should be nominated for a Darwin award IMHO.

2. Hell if I know.
Maybe they figured (wrongly) it might be inclined to repeat attacks.

6. You don't think it would repeat the attack?
If given another opportunity? It was wrong to shoot the thing, it was just enjoying a meal. It would do it again given another chance. Besides, I hear chinese boys taste just like chicken.

18. In Tennesee an elephant was lynched.
I remember reading that in Erwin TN, a circus elephant crushed a young spectator. They had a brief trial, hired a crane operator and hung the poor creature.

4. You can't make this stuff up
If anyone put this in a movie or a novel, people would scream bloody murder about how unbelievable and ridicuolous it was.

Even at the age of nine, I was smart enough to know that you do NOT piss off a crocodile.

19. Of course. When wrestling a crocodile, never give your position away that early. Catch them napping.
Although, given it isn't really a single-player sport even for large strong people, I have to say that child's actions were very slightly utterly fucken dumb.

And I was joking in the subject line; Aussie I may be, but I live far enough inland that I wrestle kangaroos, not crocodiles.

And then ride them to school.
