1. A vote cast on American Idol is a vote against all that is good about humanity,
and a vote for the continued dumbing down and celebration of mediocracy that is sending this country, and this world, into the shitter.

3. Grammy voters have given awards to several AI winners
Edited on Tue Apr-10-07 08:16 PM by Mike Daniels
which puts them on the same recognized artistic level as the Dixie Chicks.

I guess that means the Dixie Chicks also represent the continued dumbing down and celebration of mediocracy. That or that this year's awards were given to the band strictly as a political statement vs. artistic merit.

I don't care that much about American Idol but when major and respected artistic institutions give significant awards in music and acting to AI winners it either indicates that arguments such as yours are no longer valid or that the entertainment industry is full of shit totally and completely.

23. Grammys gave a heavy metal award to Jethro Tull
Edited on Wed Apr-11-07 08:10 AM by LynneSin
Seriously, there is absolutely no credence to winning a grammy award although I am a fan of Jethro Tull, heavy metal they are not.

And we won't get into the whole Milli Vanilli fiasco

27. Even though Tull winning was a major goof I always did like Tull's response to the award
"The flute is a "heavy" metal instrument".

2. Actually, this week Sanjaya was not the worst
and appeared to be the only one to work truly in the announced theme of the week.

For all intents and purposes, the actual theme wasn't Latin music but pop music performed by Latino artists or with Latin elements.

13. I thought Phil was the worst
Edited on Tue Apr-10-07 09:32 PM by mvd
But Chris and Sanjaya were close. Sanjaya picked a song that was easy to sing, so it wasn't a total disaster, but he still sounded like a lightweight. I'm not even doing grades this week. I'll concentrate on what I liked: I thought Blake had the Latin sound down well. I liked LaKisha more than the judges did - it was a fun performance - something that Melinda lacked. Jordin was the best tonight IMO.

I hate FAUX, but my vote will do nothing to hurt the network, so I again voted for who I thought was best. Mad about Gina being out. Almost didn't watch tonight.

16. I thought Chris was worst
he mangled a great song, IMO.

No arguments on Sanjaya, LaKisha or Melinda, though I liked Melinda's performance despite its lack of "fun".

Jordin...I don't know if she was the best. She was good (which, for the night might be enough to be the best) but my overall impression of her has been that she's very good, but just not quite up with what I would consider (overall, not just based on tonight's performances) the top 2 (LaKisha and Melinda).

Edited on Tue Apr-10-07 10:42 PM by mvd
Tonight I thought she nailed her song, though. Blake was close, but he overdid the vocals just a tad. He has a good sense for the genre, though. Phil's voice cracked, and I thought he sung it badly in general.

We do both wonder what the judges were thinking when they praised Chris, though. He was out of tune.

5. it is with great shame that I admit...Sanjaya wasn't the worst
tonight.

In past weeks, he's been terrible, and should have been voted out long ago. However, despite the judges' comments (have they just given up, or what?) Chris Robinson was the worst of the lot. His butchering of "Smooth" was just atrocious. :puke:

9. well, that's all well and good,
but whatever you vote won't kill the show. As I understand it, it's scheduled to go several more seasons...at best, you'll force the show to change how the winner is decided.

11. All of the performances were sub-par
which ironically is what make Sanjay one of the few people I actually enjoyed watching today.

I don't watch the show with any regularity but it seems that some of theme weeks have been pretty WTF.

A) Bands or styles that influenced Ms. Stefani

B) Latin music week or, more accurately, pop music with a Latin element - At least if they had been forced to sign real Latin music this go-around may have been more entertaining.

14. the funny thing is...
Sanjaya is not the horrible singer that everybody thinks he is. Perhaps he doesn't have as strong voice of say, a Melinda or the charisma of somebody like Blake, but he can sing. Tonight for the first time I did see a some strength to his voice, so I think he can certainly improve enough where his talent may equal his popularity. And even if it doesn't, who the fuck cares?

I sure don't get this whole "Vote for Sanjaya to bring down Fox" or whatever the stupid mantra is. Like paying attention to a television show is going to prove some sort of stupid fucking point about how these shows are the downfall of western civilization or some such bullshit. Turn the fucking channel if you don't like the fucking show.

18. Amen!
Yeah, the news networks overhype the show, and the show itself is fluff (and on Fox), but people act like this show is the sign of the Apocolypse. People, it's just a stupid TV show! If you don't like the show or the coverage, nobody's forcing you to watch it!

Sanjaya-wise: I thought he seemed very capable tonight, and was the only contestant who took a risk and sung partially in Spanish. He's definitely not the best singer on the show, but I was pleasantly surprised tonight.

Not a minute too soon, too... he was probably going to become a verb in future years (i.e., you really Sanjayaed that, didn't you?)

21. Well this post appears now to be for the viewers.....
...being a longtime viewer, I'll add my 2 cents worth. I'd like to point out that each season there is always THAT ONE guy who somehow manages to NOT get voted off from week to week when clearly he is way outclassed by the remaining contestants. It has always been a male too. Last season was the kid who looked to be about 12, no he was not really 12 but he looked that way and his talent was clearly substandard and yet somehow he lasted and lasted and lasted. (No I do not judge on looks...Clay Aiken is one of my all time faves and he started out looking goofier than most, imo)

I suspect, but mind you this is just a suspicion, the show may be rigged a bit....

I could be wrong too. Perhaps the "Vote For The Worst Guy" thingy as proposed by the OP has been ongoing for many seasons now...this also could explain that strange tenacity of each of the prior season's weakest singers.

I like Jordan Sparks (sp?) btw. She is a great singer each week and she did alright this week as well. She seems to be gaining in self confidence or "peaking" just at the right time too. I suspect she will wind up in 2nd or 3rd with an honest shot at first even though I do not feel that she has the strongest talent.

Lastly, sorry Bombtrack...I have never voted for any contestant from any season yet...I do not plan on starting now either.

22. Kevin Corvais may be who you're thinking off
but he, unlike Sanjaya, managed to be booted off before they got to the "touring ten".

However, I don't doubt that the judges deliberately advance some "marginals" in an attempt to keep the viewers who watch mostly for the chance of a spectacular train wreck. Generally, those signers only last another elimination or two although one occasionally finds some driftwood and manages to cling on for a bit longer.

FWICR, VFTW started a few years back and seems to be able to keep people on for a brief period past their normal expiration date. However, even with Stern thrown into the mix this year I can't see how they can keep Sanjaya afloat ahead of Melinda, Lakeisha, Blake, and Jordin.

In my opinion, Haley, Phil and Chris R. won't be around much longer even if Sanjaya wasn't in the mix and I think Haley or Chris will be the one saying "toodles" this week.

25. I haven't either but I'll vote for this Sanjaya kid
only to show what a farce American Idol really is. Force them to give a recording contract to someone who clearly has no talent for singing and a show that to me is nothing more than an over-hyped karoake show.

This will be the "Quiz Show" for our generation

34. Yes
somehow giving the show even MORE attention and giving the media MORE to write about will somehow bring down the show. :eyes:

The producers are LOVING Sanjaya! Do you really think they care about elevating the most talented person? Or do they care more about keeping their show in the news so more people watch it?

This is one of the stupidest campaigns ever.

35. WRONG. Voting for Sanjaya HELPS Fox get even bigger ratings
Because of Sanjaya, American Idol is something EVERYONE is talking about. He's in the news almost every day. More and more people are watching Idol because of the Sanjaya thing.

Everytime you vote for Sanjaya, you help make the story bigger and bigger, and Idol gets bigger ratings, and fox makes more money.

Trying to call it a "vote against fox" is ridiculous. It's just a vote against music. Fox is absolutely LOVING this.
