I have reconciled with my conservative Dad.
This past week, I have started speaking to my Dad again. He and I disagree on many many things and politics is one of them. He and I would have screaming matches about Reagan and Bush constantly and he keeps harping away about Clinton. However, I think he maybe growing disillusioned with the Republicans as of late but he has made it clear he is no fan of the Democrats either. In fact I think he is sick of the whole thing! He and I have not spoken in 6 years. He still harbors some right-leaning views and I am afraid one political comment will wreck our reconnection. I am suppose to go down to California to meet him in July. Wish me luck on this!

I don't hate him. He is my Dad but I cannot agree with his politics.

John

2. I still get along with all of my republican friends and family.
You just leave out the politics. Some things just aren't worth losing family. Good luck to you and your dad!! :)

3. Shell Beau is giving
you sound advice, about keeping politics out of conversations.

He's your dad, you should stay in touch, keep connected. Be glad that your dad talks to you, is making the effort too!

4. I think eventually W. will end up being a 'uniter' in some cases
because he has taken the Republican party beyond the pale. I think he's created a lot of independents. Congrats on your reconciliation with your Dad, and good luck in July.

5. I haven't spoken to my "father" in decades...
Well, my step father, actually-- I don't even remember my biological father. But my step father is an unmitigated asshat. He gives being human a bad name. It's been nearly thirty years since I've had any contact with him. I used to say that I couldn't wait to piss on his grave. Time has helped me mellow-- now I understand that traveling to his grave would be a waste of energy. I'll just piss off my back porch and be satisfied that he's not a part of my life any longer.

6. Well its not a requirement that fathers and sons discuss politics
Stay off the topic. If one or more of you can't do that, then neither of you are grown up enough for a real relationship.
