Can't get either variety here. So we eat Fujis and Galas

38. Cortlands make excellent apple sauce
and I used to use them in pies back when I could still cook.

We have an orchard a few miles away. I love me some fresh picked Cortland apples in the fall.

7. My first choice
is Macouns if they are fresh. They snap when you bite them and are very juicy. Unfortunately, they have a short shelf life. Otherwise, Fiji are OK, Macs are good, Granny Smith's.

11. Eastern Macs are lovely
Whenever I go home to Vermont for a visit in the autumn, I make a point of eating as many Macs as I can get. The ones we get out here from Washington are mealy and bland - don't resemble what I call a Mac in any way. :(

12. The cold air at night is what gives them that crunch.
If you take that Vermont mac and store it at room temp for a day it gets all mealy and soft.

9. Me? Never.
RDs are too mealy and dry. Certainly don't live up to their marketing.

I love, love, LOVE Winesap apples when I can find them. They are called "winesaps" because biting in to one tastes very similar to a glass of wine.

When I can't find those, (usually have to make a trip into the mountains) I like granny smiths.

Red Delicious and MacIntosh have no flavor at all.

34. Last time I had them was up in the north bay, but I've seen them...
...at the Hollywood farmers market on a couple of occasions. I think they're pretty much past season right now, but keep your eyes open starting around August.

28. Orins, Ambrosia and Pinata top my list
in that order. Red and Golden Delicious are far, far down the list.

(Japanese Orins are by far the best; B.C. ones are not quite as fragrant, nor as tasty)

try a Fuji. For me, as good as Gala's are, the Fuji's are just a little bit better. I'll gladly settle for either though. :)

45. but you know what?
I've read recently that red delicious (ick) have the most nutrients of any kind of apple; the skin is especially full of good stuff. I eat an apple every day, but it's been a looonnng time since I've had a red delicious and don't plan to, despite the nutritive benefit.
