Although I like the song!

Here's the original

And as if it couldnt get any worse, this is the 2003 remake after the lead singer had some "enhancements"

1. Is it still ok to label things as "gay"?
Not in the playground "That's sooooo gay!" context, but in reference to...well...to things like this?

Since moving to the West Village in New York, I find myself at an impasse with this phrase more often than usual...

10. I know what you're saying
Like, a ridiculously masculine straight guy can be called "macho" (or ass) and most don't consider it offensive. On the other hand, say that a ridiculously flamboyant gay man is "so gay" and many take offense. I need a word for these people that I can feel comfortable using.

2. The moment I read '2003', I **knew** it was 'You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)'!
Edited on Sun Mar-25-07 12:43 PM by HypnoToad
:D

I LOVE that song, and oddly enough the 2003 version is almost as good (though replacing 'record' with 'CD' wouldn't have come amiss...)

Pete Burns is the lead singer. And his vocal inflection from the 1985 original is rather better... But the 2003 video's f/x are terrific.

Reading peoples' comments, however... I'd suggest nobody else does. Ouch.

6. I just got a totally bizarre ambisextrous vibe from that
He looks like he is, as used to be called, polymorphous perverse.

Men, women, sheep, large reptiles, perhaps all of them together. If it's got a pulse, he's there.

8. I saw Dead or Alive in concert
Edited on Sun Mar-25-07 02:26 PM by Maestro
in the 80s at the Starck Club in Dallas. It was quite a unique experience. Girls and Guys all oogling Pete Burns. Hey, but the music was great! BTW, Pete has not aged well. He has had one too many plastic surgeries.

Uh guys. He really is gay. Look at the most recent pics of him. He is now a girl.

SilverJackal (15 hours ago)
Unless you have actual proof that Pete Burns is now a woman instead of a drag-queen, you are still up shit creek without a paddle. Do the world a favor by climbing the highest building in Russia, jump off, and slit your throat on the way down you Nazi son of a bitch. Oh, and wear a dress while you're at it too. That way the people can point up and say "Flying homo" as you free fall to Earth. Have a nice flight, bitch!

11. I guess I shouldn't go there
and tell them that when I saw him with Dead or Alive he came out with a woman's brassiere type outfit and sexy black netting like hose and high heels. He was a very pretty man, but the collagen implants in his lips are over done. Poor guy, but if he is happy, so be it.

12. yes, I don' know why they pump up the upper lip so much
it always looks fake and I don't really understand for the life of me why people can't see it. I think the argument is whether he is a pre-op or post-op transexual and I don't know and I'm not sure if he has made that public, it's really his own private business and I think the youtube poster was just trying to address the habitual fetish of calling male musicians 'fags' in the comments...it is so strange but that one comes up in the comments every time there is a heated debate about a male musician or group of musicians.

his wiki bio is interesting

14. The 1996 video suggests pre-op...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LZLEDUzBH4w

FWIW. When it comes to artists, it's the end product I find interesting. Any artist that looks like some bloke in a tailored suit is going to be boring; it reeks as much manufacturing as the music.

15. I can't believe Pete Burns and Boy George did what they
did 20 years ago. I mean, they'd get flack if they did it now, and this was back in the Reagan/Thatcher era so how on earth did they ever find the guts to do it then? I have such an admiration for their courage when I look at those videos now. It might have been because the fashions at that time were heavily influenced by new wave music and so 'outlandish' or whatever that it allowed artists like Boy George and Burns and Marilyn, etc to blend in a little bit better. I'm just so thankful I grew up in that musical era even though I never thought I would be saying that, lol.

21. yes, we were young so of course
we were open minded. Plus the fashions were outer limits, like Madonna and Flock of Seagulls and all that. It seemed to be about how outrageous can you be...because there was also that preppy streak going on as well and maybe the music fashions were a rebellion against that. But you know the adults had to be freaking out about Boy George and Prince and all of them... I remember people seriously believing (I grew up a fundie) that Michael Jackson was the antichrist.

33. Fashion was influenced by new wave. I believed it made things easier,
and artists are always known for not "toeing the line" when it comes to fashion. That's why it was accepted back then; there was no homosexuality being flaunted; everybody saw it as part of the New Wave genre.

Somebody made it popular (I think it was Boy George who started the trend, and for an MTV image he did so with style... or at least he presented it mostly as an MTV image... What I ought to do is read up his biography and see when people first thought he was gay instead of a New Wave performer...)

Besides, it was a music video - very new back then and it was 'hip' to be different and zany on television. Crossdressing was. One has to wonder what people look when outside their MTV image. That's where real bravery comes in, if it is about transsexualism and not just puttin' on a show for entertainment.

Milton Berle, in his day, wore womens' clothing just to get a laugh. Once again, entertainment to the contemporary masses. I wonder if anybody threw slurs at him? (Maybe somebody could put up a youtube of one of his acts and see if he's called the F-word all over the place...)

18. That is interesting. He was married?
I also didn't realize he was a victim of rape. That is awful. I hope he gets his career back on track. He really does have a good voice. I like it anyway. It brings back quite a few good memories of late night clubbing back in my heady clubbing days of my youth.
