Good news on Coffee
I was flipping through the TV channels this morning, and I heard something on FAUX that caught my interest. It was on their health segment, sorry I don't know the name;

Four or more cups of coffee a day reduces the risk of type II diabetes. Seems it is the caffeine that does it, in any form. If this is true, I am almost ready to forgive FAUX for a limited number of their errors on their politics. I LOVE COFFEE, but have cut back in recent years.

On the other hand, given their general limit of accuracy, is it more probable that I will die of some loathsome disease if I drink more coffee. Any body hear any more about this?

1. check the science
I have never heard about this. If it comes from FauxNews, I would do some research first.

2. Here's a link to a Miami Herald story...
"Java junkies, go grab yourself another cup o' joe. And another.

Coffee may be a magic bean of protection against one of America's surging epidemics -- Type 2 diabetes.

In a Harvard medical study released Monday, long-term coffee drinkers cut their risk of developing the disease by 30 percent to 50 percent compared with those who didn't drink the bitter brew.

Results confirm what was first reported last year by scientists in the Netherlands."

3. I saw this earlier this week on other channels
My question is, what is considered a cup of coffee? My little coffee pot brews 4 cups, which translates to 2 mugs worth. Am I drinking 4 cups or 2 cups? Is a tall latte at Starbucks one cup or 10 cups?

10. Years ago, when there was a study
purporting to show that coffee caused cancer, I wrote a song. it even got played in some New York nightclubs, but only, of course because my brother is a musician in that city. I have a copy, but not where I can easily get it. I remember these lines:

I love my cup of coffee,
I've always had one near.
I'll never give up coffee,
I'd rather give up beer!

6. the research is just preliminary, and is at this point statistical
'coincidence', so to speak, that people who drink so much coffee (I heard 6 cups a day) also have a lower incidence of Type II diabetes. This one study did state that the coffee must be caffeinated; decaf high volume drinkers did not show the same lower incidences of Type II diabetes. That could either indicate that caffeine and the manner in which it is introduced into the body in coffee is the factor, or that something in the decaffeinating process removes any possible beneficial side effect. Or the caffeine/coffee could possibly not be the source at all, as other possible linked causes have not been identified or eliminated in this preliminary study. For example, perhaps heavy coffee drinkers are Type A personalities, and the genetics involved with this is linked with lower risk of Type II diabetes. As a heavy coffee drinker myself, I know that when I drank coffee all day long, I would snack less...for example, I avoided that 3pm doze off by drinking coffee, instead of a sugary snack that many resort to.
Caffeine has been linked with the destruction of bones and leading to osteosporosis.

11. Here in fact is some science proven to combat type 2 diabetes:
(unless it's hereditary).

Stop eating so damned much and do some excercise.

Note that this is not directed at anyone in particular, and especially not at the topic starter. I'm just a little bit tired of people getting fed crap about how some magic change in their diet is gonna change all their health problems. Seriously, it's not hard to be healthy. Don't smoke (use a vaporizer!!). Drink in moderation. Eat healthily; this means a balanced diet. And excercise. It's true, even 30 minutes to an hour a day will improve your health. It's not gonna turn you into Brad Pitt, but it will definitely help you out.

12. All true,
but think of this. There are so few pleasures in life that are actually good for you that finding one is always a pleasure. Everybody knows that starchy foods that have been fried, excessive amounts of meat, tobacco, or smoke in any form for you pot lovers out there, lots of wild sex with numerous partners, drugs of all sorts, sitting pleasantly on your ass watching TV are all bad for you. Even sitting on your ass reading a good book is probably bad for your heart.

On the more active front, sky-diving, rock-climbing, and bar fighting, etc. all have their downsides.

So it's nice to know that something I enjoy as much as coffee is decreasing some risk.
