Christ, am I decadent, spoiled, and/or just plain LAZY enough?
Big Weather is supposed to come in tonight, of the winter variety.

So I'm planning to take my PowerBook upstairs when I go to bed, and leave it on the table next to our bed.

That way, in the morning, I can find out if my son's school has been cancelled or delayed, without having to get out of bed.

If there's no school, I can just retreat to the warmth of Mrs R and snooze for another hour.

Pitiful, eh?

1. I'd call it efficient.
A respected and time honored trait up here in New England!

5. My thoughts exactly.
:D "Lazy" would be the way *I've* been acting today...I have about four loads of laundry to do, and I had all afternoon free. Did I get *any* laundry done? No. I slept instead. If anyone's lazy, it's me - you are, as mainegreen pointed out, just being efficient. :hi:

8. If you slept, it was because your body was tellng you it NEEDED to sleep.
I have to tell Mrs R that, over and over, when she gets all apologetic about going to bed early or taking a nap.

Nothing to feel ashamed about.

11. I dunno, though...
I went to bed early last night and got almost eight hours of sleep, so I feel kind of guilty (usually I get about six hours of sleep). I guess you're right, though - at least, I'm going to keep telling myself that! ;) Thanks. :hi:

9. But there's that Puritan Work Ethic we're supposed to have in New England, too.
The poor SOBs who have to get up and drive to work, no matter the weather, will be out there suffering, so I should do my part and suffer, too, yes?

...On second thought, no. I'm not going to feel bad. They don't want to commute, they can take the same risks I did in starting my own business, and pay the $1800 per month I pay for health insurance as well.

12. Hows working on a mac been treating you?
You deal in the web don't you? I seem to remember you had a rather crazy site involving some complicated cords?
I could be wrong. My memory does get a bit hazy.

Either way, hows the mac? I've seriously been thinking about getting one as it's getting to be time to upgrade the machine.

16. I've always been Mac-based. What's new for me is (finally) moving into OSX, while at
the same time, jumping up an average of five (really!) versions of the six or seven applications that I use the most, not to mention switching from quark to InDesign...

Steep learning curve ahead!

Notwithstanding how much I dislike OS X so far (probably because of unfamiliarity), if you're using Windows, I'd still recommend that you look into a Mac. If for no other reason than the fact that I still have half a dozen Macs dating back to 1985 (!) and they all still work.

In fact my 1998 PowerBook (yes, nine years old) still get used every day, needing only a new keyboard every three years or so because I type hard. In fact, it's my "hang around on DU" machine of choice, because I can smoke and drink while using it and take it outside on the screen porch where it's dusty and chilly, and it just soldiers on...There's something to be said about hardware quality, indeed. Find ANYONE who uses an 8-year-old Windows laptop every day, I dare you.

And, with the Intel-chip Macs, you can run Win XP natively (no emulation software needed) and have the best of both worlds...

For the best pricing, look for closeouts when Apple introduces a new model. I just got a MacBook Pro that listed for $3600, and paid just over $1700 for it, three days after its successor was introduced.

17. My doc wrote out a prescription for me that simply said...
Sleep when you can...

It still doesn't help me get to sleep but it validates my mid afternoon naps and walking out of a boring meeting....

19. Did you read the newspaper article today that said naps were a BIG factor in
cardiac health? The study indicated that you could cut your risk of a heart attack by as much as sixty percent by having a bit of a siesta every day.

Your doctor is a wise man (or woman).

24. Me, too. I don't much like sleeping at night, but that 20 minutes at about 2 PM is great.
Especially given that it's on the couch. When I used to have insomnia (and I had it BAD), hitting the couch would help a lot.

I'd like to think that like the Shakers they had that pragmatic side. Why get up and go some place just to confirm that you don't need to get out of bed yet?

I get text messages from the local TV station regarding our district.

That is how I found out about the 2 hour delay and then the cancellation.

14. An elegant solution to an age old problem.
Laziness WORKS.

I used to work for a guy named Joe. Joe was the laziest man I have ever met in my life.
He was also the guy everyone went to when they needed to learn the quickest, easiest (read efficient)
way to do a job. Laziness works.

most of civilization, hasn't it?

I'm NOT being facetious, here. Let's just look at central heating with a thermostat, versus having to get up and build a fire in the fireplace. Yes? How many more examples could you or I come up with to prove this point, I cannot even guess.

You're right. Laziness is a damn strong driver of innovation. (Especially if we define "laziness" as "an unwillingness to do work that shouldn't have to be done if we had sense enough to think up a better way to do it.")

Mr. Gen will bring the phone up to me before he sets out at the ungodly hour that he leaves for work. If my school cancels, my principal will call by 6 am, and I will be rolling over and putting the covers over my head for a longer winter storm slumber.

28. Yes, especially because taking the Little Guy to school is my "commute." When your office
is in your house, it's a good idea to go somewhere, even if it's just a walk around the block, just to get yourself in the "going to work" frame of mind.
