I'm so disappointed in you, DU
In nearly two and a half years here, I have not seen a level of vitriol and intolerance here as in the past three days. I consider it conduct unbecoming progressives.

Shame on you.

1. I would have to agree.
The snickers ads have resulted in more homophobic nastiness than the NJ gays "costing" the election shit.

5. I refer to all sides
There's been plenty of vitriol and intolerance to go around.

10. And all of those who were going to apologize after the election if they were wrong
Where are they?

Did you get one, sweetie? No?? Neither did I.

Oh well. Let's just shut up and carry on as if we weren't marginalized right before the election.

Wait...what was that??? We had a problem with the Snickers campaign...NOT just the commercial but the entire advertising campaign? And we're still told to shut up and it's not an election year...

Yeah, Oedipus...some have made amends the last few days...but there have been many hurtful things said to me too, including the GLBT community and our straight allies.

But can you understand how we could feel maligned on DU? In real life, I fight all the time for equality, so I guess when it comes to hanging out in here on my down time I wish I had a safe space to share the BS that I've encountered during the day, instead of having to justify why I felt that something was aggressively suppressive.

12. I recall being told to get on the back of the bus, but no apologies.
It's pathetic, really.

16. Remember it was our fault Menendez was going to lose NJ? And throw the election?
Because the NJ Supreme Court ruled on gay marriage two weeks before the election.

We got our asses kicked over that and as hard as we scratch and argued that the GAY COMMUNITY was not going to be scapegoat...YET AGAIN...we were still maligned on DU.

And no apologies. Even though I could pull up plenty of the " I bet you" and "Check in with me" after the election threads...nothing. Not one apology.

And then, when as a united front we came forth with a genuine concern...ridicule by a handful.

What's enlightening, though, is that many people understood where we were coming from. And if they didn't, once we showed them the WHOLE campaign, then ended up getting it. It was only a handful of idiots that decided that they couldn't be intellectually challenged.

But it does come down to ultimately the fight. How we have to constantly explain what is actually going on. Keep it up brothers and sisters. We're almost there.

17. I most certainly understand that
Edited on Thu Feb-08-07 01:12 AM by Oeditpus Rex
I've said so. I think this thread says so.

I've always had your back, and I hope you know that. Long before I heard of DU, I was doing what little I could for GLBT rights. I've explored my own sexuality, particularly of late, and have come to some terms with the apparent fact that I'm not 100 percent heterosexual. (I don't feel an attraction for men, especially, but there are certainly a few I'd kiss simply because I have such close friendships with them.)

So can you understand how I felt to learn that I'm a homophobe because I laughed at the screams of two doofuses in some commercials? Because I tried to see all sides of this issue?

If not, I'll tell you — I feel betrayed, and it hurts like hell.

Edit: Typo.

19. I cannot apologize for anyone
that called you a homophobe since I'm not the spokesperson for my community ( :) ).

But I also hope you know that I never engage in that type of discourse. I can recall early on in your thread that me and you were the only ones having a conversation and I told you that I would never call you a homophobe, let alone throw that word around. I think we had both thought that thread would go away and then the next day when I woke up that thread you started had EXPLODED.

I think we have a pretty good understanding over where we both stand. Let me know if you have any questions about what transpired over the last few days.

22. That was a shock to me, too
And I admit here, again, that I goofed in making a snarky OP in that thread. I apologize for that. If I'd known how big this issue was gonna get, I either would've posted it straight-forwardly or not at all.

I reached an understanding in that thread with Bluebear, too, which made me feel good, but that was Monday night. Tuesday morning was an entirely different ball game.

This has all been so insane, it's hard for me to think. When that function returns (assuming I ever had it), I'll PM you. I want more background on this so I can better understand.

A couple of days ago, somebody posted a thread here: "What's your theme song?" I said, "Same as it's been for the last 25 years — 'Oh, Lord, Please Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood'."

I don't think that's ever been so true as it is now.

Plus, you really think I would dignify the stupidity here of late by taking it seriously? Or anything seriously, for that matter.

14. Well, what do you mean by a "bad day"
Reading posts from closet homophobes on DU isn't a bad day. Getting hep C from a doorknob is a bad day.

If I got Hep C from a doorknob... yeah I'd want some support.

18. You can't get HCV from a doorknob
so your premise if flawed.

You've shared many times in the lounge your malaise and you joy. You've pretty much gotten unconditional love and support from the friends you have made, and even from strangers who may not even know you, but gave you a "hang in there dude" type of affirmation.

Homophobia, whether it's closeted or overt, is something that the GLBT community must navigate on a daily basis. When you come to a place that you think would be kind and understanding, and then you have to fight along side your community at a place you thought was an online home, that can end up being a pretty bad two days.

15. Be careful... this could be like that twilight zone
where the aliens came down and told humans they were dissapointed in all the wars. So, the humans started world peace. Then the aliens came back and said, "No, we meant your wars aren't destructive enough" and killed EVERYBODY.... careful... cause it could be like that.
