Jesus won the Super Bowl tonight for the Colts!!
I guess that Jesus hates Da' Bears.
I guess that Lovie Smith ain't a "Christian" coach.
All this God talk, and Christian influence on the outcome of the game just makes me uncomfortable.
I guess Jesus had the Colts, and he's standing at the sports book at the Mirage right now waiting to collect his winnings.

Jesus...He's SUPER!

Needless to say, I had the Bears and the points.

That's the cheesiest display of idol worship I've ever seen.

I see its hinged at the bottom of the cross....I wonder what happens if he slams on the brakes hard.
It wouldn't be pretty, but that's a 21st century crucification for ya.

2. I wanted the Bears to lose, but that is EXACTLY why...
I wasn't thrilled about rooting for the Colts. Dungy, Manning, and obviously the owner too are all Jesus freaks. I don't see how someone can believe in a god that wants them to win a football game but doesn't give a rat's ass about the what, 10,000 kids who died of starvation around the world during it?

After the AFC Championship the Colts claimed it was Gd's will. From the owner, to the coach, and even the player Saturday who said God put the ball in his hands fo the touchdown. Another point to this hypocrisy is the all work on Sunday.

87. Lovie is a Christian as well, I don't see that as a problem

I would be thrilled if a person of any faith was honest about how that faith affected their life.

GW has spent hours expressing how his "phony" faith, based on winning the Christian Right's votes is his belief. He has been telling LIES. We all know that he LIES.

The Coach for the Colts lost a child last year and he honestly expressed how his faith brought him through the pain of that experience.

I believe it was from the heart and I will not condemn him for that expression.

Frankly, I am a Christian but I don't wear my faith on my sleeve. That is just me.
But ~ I would rather someone talk about their faith and mean it than to LIE like GW.

It fascinates me how a Progressive Board would find it OK to make fun of Christianity.

If nothing else,I would think that we should be accepting of the right of Free Speech.
I thought that was one of the principles of Progressive Democrats.

89. So who's making fun of Christianity?
What's being made fun of is people whose concept of god is so shallow they think the ultimate creator of the universe takes time out of his day to help them win a sporting event, when he can't be bothered to help feed starving children. Surely you don't think your god helped the Colts win, do you?

And who are you to say Chimpy is lying? He might have a concept of Christianity totally different than yours, but that doesn't mean he can't be sincere about believing it.

90. Chimp lives by his deeds

and based on what I have seen him DO to this world --- he LIES.

Does he still have the ability to express what he believes to be his beliefs? Absolutely.

I will stay out of the discussion and let those that wish to bash Christianity go at it.

However, the FAR RIGHT does not own Christianity.

IMO, we as Progressive Democrats need to stop putting down Christianity. Christians voted for Kerry in huge numbers and we voted in huge numbers in 2006.

I am FAR LEFT and I am Christian and frankly I am tired of Democrats putting down my religion.

Who is putting down Christianity? You yourself are bashing a Christian (Bush), not the religion. That's what others on this thread are doing. Can you explain what is different between your bashing and others'?

Do you remember when the pledge hoo-hah was going on, and EVERY SINGLE DEMOCRAT in the Senate joined hands with Republicans on the capitol steps to recite UNDER GOD with "Onward Christian Soldiers" playing in the background? Yeah, lots of Dems bashing your religion there.

How about every freaking speech by every freaking candidate ending with "God Bless America"? Terrible bashing, I tell ya.

Where is this putting down of your religion, 'cuz I just don't see it.

46. The op's photo is from a prayer march reported in the NYT- the first post by Bluebear is not in that

In any case here is the orginal article for the thread's opening post:

http://www.nytimes.com/2005/01/30/sports/30jacksonville.html?ex=1264741200&en=2119a3126723b0da&ei=5090&partner=rssuserland

In Jacksonville, Faith, Hope and Charity at a Super Bowl

A prayer walk to the site of Super Bowl XXXIX took place on Saturday.

By ROBERT ANDREW POWELL

Published: January 30, 2005

JACKSONVILLE, Fla., Jan. 23 - David Garrett's mission walks in step with his city. With the Super Bowl coming to Jacksonville for the first time, the eyes of more than a hundred million people will turn to northeast Florida, known here as the First Coast. Mr. Garrett wants his ambitious hometown to make a good impression.

"When they look at Jacksonville, I want them to see loving people who care about their city," he said. "I want them to see Jesus."

Mr. Garrett is the head of the Jacksonville Baptist Association's Super Bowl Ministry. In a city where the daily paper, The Florida Times-Union, prints quotations from the Bible on its editorial page, Mr. Garrett is trying to infuse his faith into the week of celebrations that culminate Feb. 6 with Super Bowl XXXIX between the New England Patriots and the Philadelphia Eagles.

The more worldly side of those festivities has been seen in other host cities: the discos of South Beach in Miami, the saloons of the French Quarter in New Orleans and the nightlife of Buckhead in Atlanta, where Baltimore Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis was involved in a fatal street fight after the game in 2000.

"Religion is deeply embedded in the fabric of society, particularly here in this region," the N.F.L. spokesman Brian McCarthy said. "The Super Bowl often includes events that reflect the surrounding areas. That's why you're seeing more of these type of events here."

Religious groups in Jacksonville have planned interdenominational tie-ins to the game even before the crowds arrive. <snip>

The meeting was convened for the Convoy of Hope scheduled for the day before the Super Bowl in Brentwood Park, a narrow stretch of grass ringed by public housing projects. In addition to a gospel concert, the convoy will offer free food, a car show, a children's zone and such random benefits as free cholesterol testing. Pastor Nick Phoenix, the head of the food subcommittee, told Mr. Garrett and seven other volunteers that the convoy, formed by more than 100 local churches, would be the largest faith-based outreach event that the N.F.L. had ever seen.<snip>

15. I like Dungy - But I have a strong dislike for his politics
From AmericaBlog tonight...

Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy will be the guest of honor next month at a major fundraiser for one of the lead homophobic organizations in Indiana, the Indiana Family Institute. The IFI is affiliated with super homophobe James Dobson and his extreme right, anti-gay Focus on the Family.

But what's even worse, the Colts appear to have endorsed the fundraiser, apparently permitting their logo to appear on the event's official flyer, and permitting the coach to appear in the flyer in uniform and on the job.

Nuff' said.

The suicide rate among gay teens is much higher than teenagers at large, no doubt because of the homophobic ramblings of certain Christian groups. You'd think given Dungy's experience with teen suicide, he'd be quick to dissociate himself from that sort of thing. Instead, he lets them use his photo to make money.

67. Agree with you on both counts.
I like and respect Dungy as a coach. He, and Lovie Smith, are soft-spoken, modest coaches in a sport where yelling and cussing and trying to get everyone to look at "me" is the norm.

Dungy was quoted in today's paper here as saying, "Being the first African American to win this means an awful lot to me. But I also know that Lovie and I are not the best or most qualified African American coaches." "A lot of guys paved the way for us...(who) could have done the same thing if given the opportunity. I felt like I represented those guys who paved the way for me."

I don't like his politics, but he is a football coach not a politician. I may not agree with Obama's coaching style, but I like and respect him as a politician.

Oh, and I have not seen the quote from Dungy in which he says that God was on the side of the Colts and won the game for them. Could someone point me in the right direction to find that?

84. there's a lot to respect about Dungy
However, we have a long tradition in this country of religious belief being a private matter. Fifty years ago, nobody would have thought to turn the awarding of the NFL championship into a sermon of some kind. So this introduction of religiosity into the public sphere ruffles a lot of feathers.

Plus, it's a shallow religiosity at that, one that publically credits God for football victories without publically asking where God was when Katrina hit or when the son of an NFL coach decided to kill himself.

I can't believe everyone is so down on him in this thread. He's overcome a lot of personal adversity (his son's suicide last year) and a lot of professional grief (always close but, until now, never able to win the big one). His team played a very solid game and beat a Cinderella Chicago team.

I agree with you, I think the Christian talk, especially in light of how the NFL treated the churches, is extreme hypocrisy. If there's a God, he/she/it don't give a shit about sports.

Statistically, there could be one - and definitely throughout their organization.

It really made me uncomfortable at work (I work for DirecTV Sports).

EDIT: and now I learn the Colts organization is officially homophobic. Puke.

Fuck the Colts!

I felt offended at the assumption that his (our?) God cares more about guiding the Colts to a Superbowl game than guiding tornadoes to uninhabited areas.

Good thing God loves the Colts best.

Moving in strange and wondrous ways indeed.

On edit...I hope I didn't offend any believers at DU. A person can have faith in anything they want without fear of ridicule, but it's only when a sports figure assumes that God meddles in something petty as a football game to cast financial rewards one way or the other that I find absurd.

After all, you never hear a newly fired head coach claim "it was God's fault, not mine".

41. For the record, this thread embarrasses me.
It makes me envision a bunch of sensitive whiners behind keyboards who *jump* at the chance to be offended-at-every little thing.

Nothing like having an action packed game and a great time with friends and good food and drinks only to log on here to see a bunch of buzzkill whining about one of the classiest coaches in history giving props to his faith.

Oh my god. Why can't it just be normal here sometimes???????!!!!!! Do we ALWAYS have to have at least one thread that makes us all look like a bunch of touchy nerds who have a chip on our shoulders over every little fucking thing?

I did enjoy the game. I love the Superbowl. It's like a holiday to me. Traditioanl, good food, good drinks, good friends/family, AND I don't have to buy a bunch of gifts for people so it's stress free. Doesn't get much better than that. AT least for me.

97. It's not religion - it's religion in politics
It's not religion - it's religion in politics.

I doubt people are simply offended by a man of faith, or a man with faith.

The offense comes because faith has been used as a cover for many a far right wing agenda- among them a blatant oppressive homophobic agenda.

Yes, it is offensive, or annoying and repulsive that the Colts logo and their coach would rub elbows with a Dobsonite group.

This is not about disrespect for religion, Christianity or Christ.

It is about in your face cheap tricks like a quasi-clan parade tauting theological ideas and mixing them with the hoopla, commercialism of a very secular event like the Super bowl.

But then, Indianapolis is central Indiana, the former head quarters of the KKKclan in the 1920's, a weird red neck region and weirder the further south you go to Louisville.

And it is not over sensitive. their bigotry informs their behavior to their fellow human beings.
Try being an openly gay man or woman, living a quiet, decent professional life with a partner and see how those good people treat you once they learn you are gay.

All politics is local- and when religion mixes with politics- it is no longer exempt from political criticism and sarcasm, it no longer deserves the special privilege of being considered a private belief that deserves respect, It becomes a PAC, it is highly political and in many incarnation highly toxic and not at all benign.

That's why people rain on their parade, cause they are clearly asking for it.

How would they have taken it if a gay pride parade were called and marched with banners, claiming things about the game, all males, ass slapping, buff jocks cavorting in the locker room and giving praise to that concept?

66. Nice post, and I'm not even Christian
I find these expressions of faith at the end of a game to be normal and expected. Most people, after some sort of challenge that the successfully met, generally give thanks to their particular deity. So these simply don't bother me at all.

It would be interesting to have an interview with a Muslim player who thanked Allah on public television, that would make some heads explode.

But this is really a non-issue and a non-starter.

95. I find those expressions of faith to be stupid and pathetic.
Like there is some sky fairy, or Jesus in the form of a sky fairy, hovering above, determining the outcome of a stupid football game...

But, hey, that's me. I have a low tolerance for such idiocy.

48. And I thought I was being funny!
THIS is one reason why I don't like that RAT Irsay and his stupid team.
I guess God hated Baltimore and sent those moving vans.

He broke the hearts of millions of fans in Baltimore.

I'm not a nerd, I'm a football fan.
Think of how the fans in Kansas City would feel if their team up and moved to Los Angeles.
WHICH is entirely possible.

Dungy was just on ESPN saying that "The Lord had us down by 18 points against New England because he wanted to challenge us"

Look, as an afterthought maybe I regret this thread.
It wouldn't be the first time.

I'm just really, really, tired of all this Jesus/Lord public worship and honoring him for every single thing that happens that's good (for some), but no one ever says...
Jesus was pissed at those people in Lady Luck, Florida on Friday morning.

I'm from New York.
Sometimes I just don't know when to keep my mouth shut.

I hope Jesus likes the Broncos next season!

51. Well the Cardinals picked up and moved from my town to Arizona.
Arizona! All because the stupid owner didn't get a news stadium. But he didn't end up getting one there either till last year. And another thing, I lived in ARizona for a couple of years and they don't even HAVE cardinals there. They should have changed the name to the Arizona Gecko's or something more appropriate for that desert.

So I know how that feels to lose a team kind of. And when my home team the Rams won the superbowl in 2001 Kurt Warner stood on the Podium and said "first things first, THANK YOU JESUS!" and I rolled my eyes a little then too.

So I guess I'm a hypocrite.

And I really like Tony Dungy so maybe I'm touchy about it because it's him. I think he's a good guy and he probably thinks God is always concerned about everything he does every single day even on boring days so it makes sense to me that he would naturally assume God is there behind him on one of the most important days of his whole life.

72. That's true
Because if one believes that God will make things work out the way they are supposed to, then both coaches can thank God for the outcome and their good seasons and shouldn't be mocked for it. Taking the bad with the good is an integral part of Christianity.

Gotta wonder: did Jesus tell his dad to move the Colts out of town in the middle of the night back in the 1980's?

Nothing against Indy fans, it's not their fault, but I'll always think the Irsay's are shitbags for doing that to the Baltimore Colts' fans. Good for Indy, but I don't enjoy the Irsays getting to celebrate. At least Art Modell left Cleveland with the Browns' name.
