A question for experienced apartment dwellers/ penny-pinchers
Edited on Tue Jan-09-07 09:50 PM by JVS
So I'm looking at new apartments and I am wondering whether to live on the ground/1st floor or the second floor. The second floor costs $395/month rather than $375/month. My question is, would the rising heat from the apartment below me cancel out the extra $20 rent. The lower apartment is sunk into the earth for the first four feet of the wall, so I'd guess this has some kind of insulation effect. What do you guys think. Bottom or top?

4. Basement apartments are usually COLD
a real advantage in the south where our air conditioning costs are higher than heating costs. But if you are looking to stay warm move upstairs. I lived in a basement apartment in northern Ohio for 3 years and no matter what I did I WAS COLD. It's WAY worth the 20 bucks to move upstairs.

5. TOP!
The temps are the least of your problems.

The first time you get an asshole neighbor upstairs who plays Erasure with the bass turned up, you'll be VERY glad you spent the extra $20.

fsc<--- has been there

7. I currently live below someone who I am annoyed by the fact that he...
starts entertaining guests at 10 PM. OTOH, his record collection seems quite good and I would like to get dubbs of the stuff he plays. There have been times in the afternoon when I wanted to should "Turn it up, man!"

6. pros and cons
I live on the second floor of a 2 story building while my girlfriend lives on the first of another 2 story building. In my current place warming isn't too much of a problem, however I had a couple leaky roof when it rained problems that someone on the first story wouldn't have had to deal with. On the other hand, if you live on the first floor you get to hear the person above you walking all over the place, vacuuming, exercising and whatnot through the floorboards as I've experienced at my GF's.
