8. this is not a choice about the two, but about going all the way or holding back
If you are willing to put everything on the line for something that you care about, any actions you take or their consequences, be they death or the taking of another life, it is all about how far one is willing to go.

I am definitely willing to dedicate myself completely to that which I believe in. The decision, be it easy or hard, is are you willing to go the distance for that which you believe to be a righteous cause?

11. Well, I'm no fan
of violence, but I could see myself enraged enough to kill an evil person for a righteous cause. The sense of satisfaction would be momentary. I'm sure of that. I'm sure I would regret the killing and wish that I had stopped short of killing the person.

In the case of dying for a righteous cause, I can only hope I would be brave enough. And hope that my death was worthwhile, although it's hard to accept any death as worthwhile.

This makes me think of the guy saving the other guy on the train tracks. That certainly was a righteous cause. Had he died, he would have died a hero. A very tragic hero. Thank god he lived. I'm still astounded by this story. I have no words. What a guy. What a guy.

15. There is a scene in the book
"The Enemy Papers" by Barry Longyear that comes to mind when I hear people talking of "dying for a cause"

To often when someone proclaims they'll die for a cause they often mean they're willing to go to war and kill others and there is still a chance they might survive.

In "The Last Enemy" Davich (a human, who's studied an alien philosophy) asks this question, "Will you die for peace." of two warring groups and of course they proclaim their willingness to die for their cause. Meaning they will fight to the death to win.

I don't have the book handy, I wish I had it there is a phrase for what Davich does and I can't recall exactly. But in the alien history there is a story of a great leader who kills itself to save others. Davich asks his question again something to the effect "No. Will you Die for your cause. Not fight in a war. Die. If your death will bring peace would you bring about your own death."

The retort to Davich is "Neither side will willingly die."

Davich pulls his blade and slices his own throat.

The cultural impact and moral statement of the act done by a human helps bring peace.

I would find it easier to die for a cause, because if I'm wrong about the rightness of my cause all I've done is hurt myself.

20. Die.
I remember explaining to a friend once that I would die for her, but I'd kill for my nephews.

(Given a certain set of circumstances and all that. I'm not really interested in doing either right now, thank you very much.)

23. In a way, both are rather selfish
When you kill someone for a righteous cause, you are saying that your cause is more important than their life.
Dying for a cause is selfish too. It is especially selfish if you have dependents or other loved ones because you are showing that you love your cause more than them. It is selfish anyway because you cannot do anything further in this world once you are dead, even for your all important cause.
Maybe there are some circumstances where it is not so selfish to kill or die for a cause, but they have to be serious and the deaths must really make a difference. I might kill or die to save a loved ones. Beyond that, I guess that I would have to wait until things get that serious to see how I would feel.

26. easier in what sense?
i think a lot of people would choose to die because it's easier on their self image and their ego than killing

certainly it's easier in a physical sense to die in a good cause because really it's fairly passive, presumably you're doing something else and just happen to get killed, as it's always more productive to LIVE in the good cause than to die in it

on the other hand if you're twitchy and aggressive than it might be easier to get out there and start killing for your cause rather than working your way through the system

so easier how? financially? emotionally? physically? psychologically?
