Any vegan/vegetarian jocks here?
Edited on Wed Dec-13-06 02:48 PM by Taverner
Let's just say if...I were to go Veg (not vegan - I need my milk and eggs!)

What kinds of "power foods" (aka foods high in protein) would you recommend?

The obvious choice is Tofu, although the stuff has a lot of fat in it (like most meats)

Egg whites and Fat Free milk would be good too I imagine...

And of course, the staple of any gymrat, nuts.

Any other suggestions?

6. I am a vegetarian
I do some weight training. Much of the idea of a lack of protein is a myth. I make no extra effort to get protein but I have plenty of muscle. I get protein from various sources: soy milk, peanut butter, beans, tofu, hummus. If you really want extra protein they make veggie protein powders.

9. It's not the lack of protein...
It's that you have to go out of your way to get enough with most Vegetarian foods. This isn't vegetarianism that does this, but the restaraunts that make it.

8. I'm a vegan gym rat
I would stay with plant based protein, myself, naturally. Soy, rice and wheat protein are all excellent, and soy does have a complete amino profile. Nuts are excellent, but there's a lot of fat if you eat them by the can.

If you're looking to take in additional protein (which you may or may not need) whey powder blends can be good, as can egg whites.

You can always drop me a PM if you want to talk specifics, etc.

11. I usually do my weight +20 grams of protein a day
Which means 30 g per meal, at 4 meals a day and a protein shake at night.

All the shakes are milk or whey based (with some egg in it sometimes) so that stuf is good

I usually do the nuts as dessert anyway - and the fat in them is good fat - so if you're already eating a low fat diet (like me) nuts are great.

Is soy really safe in the amounts you would need to eat. It's the GMO's I'm afraid of (Soy is the biggest use for GMO's out there)

Then again, how could it be worse than forcefarmed chicken?
