Question for you guys. Would you purchase a car from someone
who didn't have the title in his/her possession? IOW, you would be plunking down x amount of dollars and then waiting to obtain title so that you could register said car?

I call bullshit, but that's just me.

What say you, DU?

3. That's what I thought, but I'm kinda out of the loop.
I'm buying a car for TeenMidlo and the guy is being an absolute prick about the money, but even after I *give* him said money, I have to wait 4-5 days for the title.

I've never dealt with this before because we always received the title in the mail about 2 weeks after buying a car.

7. Get the VIN and run it through CARFAX
Edited on Mon Dec-11-06 08:49 PM by Whoa_Nelly
Make sure it's a legit car, not a salvage.

The little bit you have shared would make me run from this deal. There are other cars out there. You pay the money, you get the car. Period.

on edit--

re: CARFAX
Good idea to do with any car you are thinking of purchasing.

11. Well, here's the deal. I put a *deposit* on the car in Oct.
because we were expecting a pretty significant influx of cash in November which was postponed due to unforeseen circumstances.

I have initiated a withdrawal from my money market, but he's riding my butt.

It's a great deal. 2004 Camry LE for $10,200, but at this point, I feel like telling him to go pound sand.

13. Get your money back
Edited on Mon Dec-11-06 08:58 PM by Whoa_Nelly
If you don't have a written deal for the car on making payment, then get your money back. He cannot keep your money of you don't have the car.

Otherwise, if you did make a written agreement, sure hope all can work out, or you may be just kissing your $$ good-bye.

8. No way
That's no different than buying a house from someone who didn't hold the mortgage.

9. The only reason
They only thing I can think of is the title is being held at a bank as collateral on the car loan. Easy solution - met seller at the bank hand the money to the bank person and get the title as the loan is released.
Problem is if the title is being for collateral on another loan. And your seller guy is dragging his feet in arrears etc...

Run.

10. No way on earth.
It's a scam in the "hey buddy, wanna buy the Brooklyn Bridge" tradition.

Just saying.

14. No way - this sounds extremely hinky
Has he given any explanation for why he can't have the title available immediately? Whatever the case, I'd look for a seller I was more comfortable with...
